JULY 11. 19B0 Counterfeit $20 Bills Reported In Eastern U.S. Washinnlon-WPB-The Secret Service said Wednesday it has arrested 20 persons since June 11 in the passing of counterfeit $20 bills in the eastern United States. A spokesman said the ring was "pretty well broken up" but that there was no way of knowing how many of Uic bogus bills are still In cir culation. The announcement follow ed the arrest Tuesday in Youngstown, Ohio, of Hugh A. Lynn, 48, on charges of making and passing the bills. Agents arrested Lynn at his home and seized a print ing press, 200 of the bogus S20s, and negatives and plates. In a warning to the public, j Secret Service Chief U. E. They're Juti Nervous "I get so nervous I could fly." is just about the actual truth as it applies to the so- called flying fish, and prob-1 ably the creature's jittery j nerves and jumpy disposition are the real reason why this i fish launches itself up and ' into the air in long, sustain- i ed glides. i And it is necessary to be come a little technical about these animals and admit that it has no real ability to fly, but like the so-called flying squirrel, only glides. The fish possesses no flight muscles such as are necessary in birds or bat. The flying fish's pectoral fins are elaborated Into wing ling extensions, the duplica tion of which has been tried ' for man-made airplanes, but so far unsuccessfully. Neither can aeronautical engineers even approximate the deli cacy of balance, the perfect streamlining of the body or the flexibility which these ! gliding fish possess... , The flying fish's distribu-; tion of weight, that is so im-l portant to all things that are I to be airborne, is a marvel of j perfection. The fish has sta bilizing fins that are placed i precisely right and capable I of the very finest of adjust- j ments to meet varying condi- ( nons oi wma direction or re sistance. The so-called flight of this fish sometimes reaches a con siderable distance, often esti mated to be as much as a quarter of a mile, sometimes at a height of 60 feet above water. The speed attained by the fish has been variously estimated at from, 25 to 45 miles per hour. " During the time the fish is in the water, the "wings" are folded back alongside the body. But when an enemy approaches, the fish acceler ates its speed by means of a fluked tail, which acts as a powerful sculling oar, until the takeoff velocity is attain-' ed. Then the slender body shoots up and out of the wave 1 crest, the wings are extended, and the gliding flight is ac complished. Usually the fish, once in the air, will bank into the wind, taking advantage of air cur rents. At such times it can be seen to adjust the "wings" to the direction and speed of the air through which it is gliding. Frequently the lit tle glider pilot becomes con fused or runs out of "fuel," and the little airborne "ship" lands on the deck of a boat or plunges Into some obstruc tion and is "wrecked." There are several varieties of "flying fish;" some are barely six inches in overall length, yet other kinds may '' be all of two feet. . One of the most popular of the poems by Kipling, VOn the Road to Mandalay," ; which was later put to music ' and enjoyed by millions of people, popularized the "fly ing fish." Their playing so . joyously along the romantic "highway" of water led to the idea that the fish "flew" because of its sheer joy to be alive. The truth, however, is , something aside from happi . ness. The flying fish takes to the air only when frightened , or to escape a hungry enemy. , At such times this fish be . comes so nervous it Literally . does come awfully close to flying.
