(Knackstedt photo) $7 Million Reactor To be Used by Army ' Forest Glenn, Md. (Science Service) A new million-dollar nuclear recator to test the efects of radiation on military equipment will be installed next year in the Forest Glen section of Walter Reed Army Medical center. It will pro duce intense, self-limiting pul ses of nuclear radiation to which samples will be exposed for short periods at repeated intervals. General Dynamics' General Atomic division of San Diego, Calif., will design and construct both the pulsed TRIGA . (Training Research Isotope (Production) General Atomic) reactor and associated Poison Glands Protect Toad From Predators; Use Is Noted Corviillis Warts on a toad are poison glands which pro tect the toad from predators such as skunks, racoons and owls. And toad warts don't cause warts on humans. Dr. Robert M. Storm, asso ciate professor of zoology at Oregon State college, said a toad is actually a pretty help less, but useful animal be cause it eats insects, small slugs and other garden pests People who have sensitive skin may get a reddening and peeling of the skin from handling toads, Storm admits, But there is no evidence that toads cause warts. 12 Kinds of Toads. Frogs Oregon has 12 kinds of toads and 9 are frogs.. The three are Rocky Mountain toad (found in extreme east ern Oregon and along the Co lumbia river near Umatilla); spadefoot toad (found in the dry areas of eastern Oregon); and western toad (found al most everywhere in Oregon except In much of the Wil lamette valley and the Coast Range). Main difference between a toad and a frog is that toads have a rough, warty, dry- looking skin and are found on land far from water, and frogs have a rather wet-looking, smooth skin and are usu ally near water. Toads probably became adapted to a land existence so they wouldn't have to com pote with frogs for water space. The most prevalont toad the western variety - Is not found In Willamette valley and the Coast Range, Dr. Storm speculated, because the steep mountain slopes and lack of shallow ponds in the western Cascades have kept It from moving from eastern Oregon Into the valley. It Is possible that the west ern toad could spread to the valley, because It is found as far down as Leaburg on the McKonzie river. Another val ley movement could come about because It is found abundantly In coastal ponds. The bull frog, an Eastern transplant, could keep the western toad from becoming too numerousln tho valley be cause it is canhaballstic and would eat the young tadpoles and toads. Once a toad gets by its first year, it Is fairly safe from many predators because the numerous poison glands the warts - develop and se crete a milky substance. Gar ter snakes, which are known to feed on toads, aren't both ered by the poison and could keep the toads from invading the Willamette valley area, Storm said. Mystery Rtmalni It is still a mystery why toads do not exist In the Wil lamette valley. Storm contin ued. Another wonder is that snakes and IouHk jthum nnnHu of tho high Cascades without any difficulty. During tho day, toads find cool, moist retreats under ob jects near water seepage, at the odge of a stream, or in a holo dug by a ground squirrel, At night when the humid ity is higher, toads come out and feed. A tood's skin ab sorbs tho moisture from the night air and holds it inside Its body. Then all day In the retreat, the moisture evapor ates and keeps the toad cool Just Ilk built-in ulr condi tioning, Sturm said, A unlquo trick of the spado foot toad is thut It can dig Itself Into tho ground Willi spado-like projections on Its feet and It can stay In the ground until It rains. Several weeks can lapse botween lis feedings. Take Advantage Spadefoot toads ean take advantage of temporary . wa ter, They have been known to lay and hatch eggs and get them through the tadpole stage within two weeks by using cow tracks filled with water. And Just to keep the record straight, the animal known as a horned load is not a Inie toad, but a lliard. The weal cm load and rocky mountain load have I body length of 4 Inches when grown; tho spadefoot') body Is bul t Inches. Toads have boon known to live 20 yours, They vary In color from gmy through yullnw green and green to brick red, Toads, Dr. Storm said, make good puts, They should be housed In a cool, moist place and can be fed any kind of living insects and earth worms, Dr. Storm presently has a National Science Foundation research grant to study the embryology and relationship of Northwestern frogs.
