General Electric touched off a decline in its group, dropping more than 3 points as management representa tives walked out on contract negotiations with the union. Westing-house, yet to begin its talks with the union, fell nearly three. Steel I Youngstown SAT Police End Career Of Renegade Squirrel Salam (UPD - A renegade squirrel thai bit at least seven persons In the past five days at the west side of the state capitol grounds was shot Wednesday after-' noon by a capitol police man. The animal was caught with one shot in shrubbery adjacent to the capitol aft er eluding authorities all day. Six persons complained of being bitten last Satur day and a 2-year-old girl was nipped on the heel Monday. None of the wounds were serious. The secretary of state's office said the animal was not one of the small tree squirrels who live in adja cent parks but was a ground squirrel, and a vi cious one. Grange News Jackson County Pomona grange will meet at the Butte Falls Grange hall Sat urday, July 23, at 8 p.m. Six Major California Homes Damaged, 2,000 Persons Forced To Leave Los Angeles OJPD- Six ma jor tires burned wildly out of control today in heat-blistered Southern California. The blazes destroyed or damaged 26 homes and cabins and forced the evacuation of more than 2,000 persons. One man was killed. The major fires had charred more than 70,000 acres of brush, timber, and other wa tershed. Additional small fires many of them started by light ning, kept the more than 2,500 fire fighters on the run for the fourth day of a smother ing heat wave. The tempera ture climbed over the 100-de- gree mark for the fourth straight day in many of the fire areas. There was no immediate hope of containing any of the major fires, four of which were in Angeles National For est, a 590,000-acre range of mountains as big as Rhode Island separating the populous Los Angeles area from the Mojave Desert. Close To Hearst Castle The major fires were: -San Simeon, 200 miles north of here, where a 30,000- acre blaze moved to within a mile of the famed Hearst Castle. -San Gabriel Canyon, 30 miles northeast of here, which had burned over 10,500 acres of valuable watershed. This blaze began Sunday from a carelessly discarded cigarette or match. -San Dimas, 35 miles north east of here, where more than 6,000 acres had been burned. -Magic Mountain, about 20 miles north, where a 19,000 acre lightning-started blaze temporarily threatened Nike anti-aircraft missile sites. Youth Camps Evacuated -Big Pines, 70 miles north east of Los Angeles, where a 1,750-acre blaze forced the evacuation of two youth camps near Big Pines and Jackson Lake. -Mt. McKinley. 70 miles northeast of the San Bernar dino National Forest, where more than 1,000 acres had been charred by a fast-moving new blaze. In addition 31 new blazes, started by lightning, sprang up overnight in the heavily timbered forest. All of the blazes except the San Simeon blaze were In the mountains surrounding the Los Angeles area. Motion Filed To Restore Lumber Shipment Ruling Portland-IUPD-A motion to restore an Interstate com merce Commission ruling aim ed at in-transit delays of lum ber shipments was filed Wed nesday afternoon in U.S. dis trict court here. The motion would reverse a present court order that sets aside the ICC ruling. The motion was filed after 19 lumber companies, includ ing Weyerhaeuser Timber Co. and Georgia Pacific Co., first filed another motion asking to intervene as defendants with the ICC against 104 oth er lumber companies and the Chicago and Northwest Rail road. Crux of Dispute Crux of .the dispute is the railroad practice of granting up to a 15-day free delay en route for lumber shipments by "transit" lumber dealers who ship lumber and find a customer while the shipment is en route. Banning of the practice came from the ICC on the grounds that the railroad did not grant the same privilege to other customers. District Judge John F, Kil kenny signed a temporary re straining order on the ICC ruling after the railroad and the 104 lumber companies protested.
