Mr. and Mrs. Richard Knhclin of Plant City, Florida,
couldn't be happier with tho way their new Corvair has
worked out aa a combination family and business car. On
their newspaper distribution route alone they travel more
than 400 miles a week over all kinds of roads. Little wonder
they're so pleased with the gas mileage they're been getting
"at least twenty-three miles to the gallon with an auto
matic transmission'. . . and we've had no trouble with
our Conrair." The Kahclins have equally good things to
say about Corvair's easy-going comfort and unique con
venience features. They especially tike the way the fold

By MILTON RICHMAN

Cuscy Stengel fears no one

a pair of musclcmcn like

Slcngcl'a strategy is simple
but effective. He merely sta
tions Mantle and Murls in

had exactly such a notion
Monday night. But when
Mantle and Maria got through
with them, the Indiana were
dumped to third place and the
Yankeca increased their Amer
ican league lead to two games
with a 0-2 victory.
Mantle did hia handiwork
with a three-run homer, his
22nd of the season, to climax
a five-run rally off Dick Stig

Maris applied the clincher
with his 20th homer at the
expense of reliever Barry
Latman In the ninth.
Ford Win Sixth
Mantle and Maria made It
easy for southpaw Whitcy
Ford, who gave up eight hits
In posting hla sixth victory.
Johnny Romano accounted for
both Cleveland runs with a
homer in the second inning
and a aacrifice fly in the
fourth.
The loss of the game was
of secondary importance to
the Indians. The loss of short
stop Woodie Held hurt much
more. Held auffered a broken
finger during the first inning
and is expected to be out of
action from three to five
weeks.
Only two other games were
played in the AL while all
the teams in the National took
a breather and enjoyed an
open day.

Head Coach Tom Landry In
dicated he was satisfied with
the condition of the veterans
who checked in during the
weekend and that he thought
the combination of established
National Football league play
ers plus some promising rook
ies would give the Dallas team
a solid nucleus to build on for
its first year in the loop.
Observed Landry: "Being
able to have a group of 38 vet
erans will make us a bit
stronger than one would nor
mally expect of a first year
team." He was referring to
such standouts as Eddie Le
Baron, . Don Heinrich, L. G.
Dupre, John Gonzaga and
Duane Putnam. He added:
"I thought our rookies did a
good job last week, and I was
mighty pleased to see the con
dition in which the veterans
reported."
The veterans got a chance
to show just what shape they
are in by running the famed
Landry mile this morning. The
Landry mile is a test of their
condition, a test that the
rookies went through last
week. Landry had written to
the players a month ago and
told them to be ready to run
the mile in six minutes.

Piersall Fined
For Horseplay
Cleveland, Ohlo-IUPD - The
question of whether to coddle
Jimmy P'crsall or punish him
was settled today when Man
ager Joe Gordon fined the
Cleveland outfielder a day's
pay for his actions in the bull
pen during Sunday's double
header. Cordon levied the fine
against Piersall because he
had tossed baseballs into three
gloves he had laid out on the
ground for the amusement of
right field patrons.
In addtion, the Tribe man
ager set up an automatic $500
fine for each time Piersall is
thrown out of the game by
an umpire for the remainder
of the season.
Gordon's action came short
ly after General Manager
Frank Lane had said iPersall
"needs sympathetic handling."
"I think Jim needs sympa

Cleveland Indian general
manager, told the Sigma Del'

annual baseball luncheon
Monday.
"I just hope Joe Gordon
