lo run against the very fast
curs from California.
Could Settle Question
Pollard at his bust appear
ance al the Ashland oval was
apologetic because he had
hud mechanical trouble and
was unable to race In the
main event. Barring similar
u n f o r eseen circumstances,
the question should be set
tled this Suturday as to
whether Art can beat the
California auto jockeys.
Local drivers are Improv
ing their cars with the ob
jective of keeping nt least
part of the $1,000 purse In
the Rogue valley. Johnny
(Tallspln) Jones has brought
a new car from Sacramento,
Calif. It Is powered with a
full race Cadillac engine and
is a hot machine. Jones will
take his first ride In the furi

be spectacular.
Since Bob Bcnefield, Red

a fullv modified Pontiac en

caliber of equipment, there's
potential for a fast and ram

Great Day
For West
Detroil-fljPD-It was a great
day for the West in the 57th
annual Western Open.
Three sons of Texas and a
native Californian shot three
under par 69's Thursday to
share the first round lead in
what promises to be one of
the wildest scrambles of any
professional golf chase.
Jackie Burke, Fred Hawk
ins and newcomer Butch
Balrd-all from the Lone Star
State-and Bob Rosburg, who
learned his fairway maneu
vers on the shores of the Pa
cific, led the field of 159 into
today's second round.
But their advantage is a
shaky one. Ten more contend
ers were hot on the quartet's
heels just one stroke back
while 18 others were only
two strokes off the pace at 71.
