He believes that complete oral X-rays are warranted only where such diagnosis aid la essential In determining proper treatment. Leading professional dental and radiological groups, as well as authorities In the U.S. Public Health Service (PUS) agreo with this. However, den tists and radiologists caution against the other extreme tendency of avoiding X-rays Thawed Food May Be Refrozen Frozen foods which have been allowed to thaw should not be refrozen without first being cooked. When thawing foods for a meal, try to thaw only as much food as you will use. Thawed foods which have been refrozen are not always unsafe, but they will always lose flavor and quality. In many cases they will spoil quickly. In case the freezer opera tion Is stopped, keep tho door closed. If the freezer la well filled and the foods are pack aged properly, they will usu ally stay frozen for at least two days. If freezer operation Is to be stopped for a lengthy period of time, dry ice, arranged to cov er all the packages, will pre serve the foods. Dry Ice can often be obtained from a gro cery or Ice cream store. If none is available, the food packages may, of course, be stored in a commercial food locker. Should the frozen food pack ages begin to thaw before froezer operation can be re sumed, check each package carefully. You can refreeze any package In which some Ice still remains. These foods should bo marked and used as soon as practicable. Any foods which have thaw ed completely should be cook ed before freezing again. Fruits may be baked Into pics, canned, or made into pre serves. Vegetables may be canned. Meats, fish, and poul try may be cooked and re frozen, but should not be stored In the freezer for any long period of time. FOR INCOME'S SAKE Well equipped garnge grossing more than $66,000 per yoar. "As much damage can be done to one's health by com pletely rejecting the use of dental and medical X-rays as by their Injudicious use," a radiologist from PUS warn ed. Rut he agreed that the advice offered by the Nobel Ist was essentially sound. Disclosure Urged Dental authorities urge "full disclosure" when a den tist recommends the use of X-rays In any particular In stance. "The putlent should feel free to ask and the den tist should he willing to ex plain why X-rays are recom mended." As a matter of fact, studies show that dentists have been ahead of other medical groups In demanding and securing the most modern and efficient X-ray machines and equip ment designed to cut down radiation exposure. In many offices and clinics, leaded aprons are worn dur ing X-ray by the patient as well as the dentist or tech nician In order to further cut down exposure. Monitoring badges are commonly worn to measure levels of exposure to office personnel. According to the U.S. PUS Division of Radiological Health, the 88,000 practicing dentists In the United States are their own radiologists and thus are exposed to far more radiation than any individual patient. "Enlightened self-interest," therefore, as well as a desire to provide the best In dental care underlies the demand of the dental profession for the best and safest X-ray equip ment. Inspections In Demand PHS inspections of dental X ray equipment throughout the United States by its field workers are so much In de mand that the division of ra diological health has devised a "do-it-yourself" testing kit. The kit contains film that Is exposed to the machine tested and then mailed back to PUS for analysis. Following analysis, recom mendations are forwarded for correction or Improvement of equipment if Indicated. Dr. George Crocker, In charge of the PHS program, used the kits successfully first In Prince Georges County, Md., near here. The technique Is well on its way toward nation-wide acceptance, ac cording to Dr. Crocker, and will cut down radiation ex posure from dental X-rays to a great extent. New and belter machines and fast film hnve, In the past decade, cut down rndin lion exposure from dental X-rnys by as much as a thou sand per cent. "We take the position In dentistry and mod lelne," said one PHS author ity, "that no radiation Is best and wc Intend to keep what we must use at a minimum."
