MEOFOHB, OWH. 4 B .B I Star's Distance, Age Revealed By New Method Washington- (Science Serv ice) - If stari were like many women In hiding their ages, they would have to hide from earthly telescopes, so ancient are they. However, they cannot now hide their years because Dr. Bcngt Stromgren of the In stitute for Advanced Study, Princeton, N. J., has develop ed a new method for finding the ages and distances of stars. It can be applied to hun dreds of thousands of stars using telescopes no larger than the 36-inch reflector now in operation at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Ari zona. New Information From such observations will come much new information on the precise shape and com position of the Milky Way gal axy in which the sun and its planets are located. By apply in thp nnv method, astrono mers should also learn about the arrangement in spate oi i stars of varying ages and' physical characteristics. j There is also the possibility, ' using the 200-inch telescope atop Mt. Palomar and the 120 Inch at Mt. Hamilton, Calif., of investigating the physical similarities and differences of stars in the Milky Way galaxy I compared to stars in other, nearby galaxies. These are the predictions made here by Dr. W. W. Mor gan, director of the University of Chicago's Yerkes Observa tory, Williams Bay, Wis., in the journal Science (July 8). To Learn Characteristics Dr. Morgan also predicted that the characteristics of the average stellar population for galaxies far beyond the Milky Way would be determined from studies of their shapes. Galaxies are clusters of count less millions of stars, such as the Milky Way, and there are unnumbered millions of gal axies. Thp new method bv which a star's age and distance are found depends on precise measurements of a star's radi ation within certain narrow, especially selected regions of the rainbow-hued spectrum of light. Grange News EagU Point Grange j The Eagle Point Grange met July 5 with one guest, j Eoscoev Roberts, Grange in-; surance agent, present, who gave a short talk on what hap pened in insurance at the recent State Grange conven tion, j C. C. Hoover gave reports j on agriculture and community i service. Mrs. Jim Edge spoke on the Grange festival scheduled Sat urday, July 30, at the Elks picnic ground, and she urged all members to get tickets soon to facilitate purchasing food for the event. Quarterly reports were heard from the lecturer, sec retary and home economics chairman. Mrs. Jake Brown reported on the HEC meeting held at her home June 29. It was a potluck picnic, and about 20 women attended. On display were new stainless steel knives, forks and spoons pur chased for the Grange kitchen. It was reported that Mrs. Ross Cline is on an extended visit in the ea3t. She left two weeks ago by plane for Ohio, and would enjoy hearing from friends. The lecturer's program con sisted of slides and a talk on termites and termite con trol given by Woody Woodard of Medford. The next Grange visitation will be at Upper Rogue Grange Thursday, July 21. Grange members were re minded that the next meeting to be held July 19 is to be a social meeting with the lec turer planning the entertain ment for the evening. Refreshments were served following the meeting by the Hicksons and the Hoffmans. Los Angeles (UPD-The Dem ocratic party, In nominating a Catholic for president, Is ' betting that religious preju dice has declined sharply In the United States since Al Smith lost In 1928. It also Is taking cognizance ot the fact that Catholics now constitute nearly 23 per cent ' of the U.S. population, com- pared with only 10 per cent in 1928. Democratic politicians have no illusion that antl Catholicism has disappeared from America. But they can cite hard political facts to but tress their belief that it has notably diminished. In recent year. Catholics have been elected as governor or sena tor in many predominantly non-Catholic states, Including California, Ohio, Michigan. Main and Minnesota. Sen. John T. Kennedy him self demonstrated In his West Virginia primary victory that a Catholic can roll up a big majority In a state where Catholics constitute less than , 5 per cent of the population. Some of Kennedy's Demo cratic foes demonstrated the formula repeatedly during the battle over the presidential nomination. It also would be naive to doubt that Kennedy will lose some normally Democratic votes simply because he is a Catholic. In heavily Protes tant areas like the Deep South, where suspicion ot the Catholic church is a deeply ingrained historical heritage. he may lose a great many votes. But Kennedy's strategists are convinced that these loss es will be more than offset by the votes which he can ex pect to pick up, In pivotal eastern states, from Catholics who have not been voting Democratic In recent elec tions. Important Catholic Vote Many Catholics resent any suggestion that there is a I "Catholic vote" which will be . automatically attracted to Kennedy. But Kennedy's own lieutenants made this argu ment, and furnished impres sive documentation for it in a memorandum distributed at the time Kennedy was seek ing the vice presidential nom ination in 1956. This memorandum said voter surveys show that "there is, or can be, such a thing as a 'Catholic vote, whereby a high proportion of Catholics of all ages, resi dences, occupations and eco nomic status vote for a well known Catholic candidate or a ticket with special Catholic appeal." It also said that "the Cath olic vote is far more impor tant than Its numbers be cause It is neavuy cunten trated in "the pivotal states with huge electoral votes." Specifically, there are " states, with a total 01 103 electoral votes, in which Catholics constitute mora than 30 per cent of the to tal population. Only 270 elec toral votes are needed to elect a President. 4-H NEWS Talent Chicks Poultry The ninth meeting of the Talent , Chicks 4-H Poultry club was held July 5 from ' 4 to 8:30 p.m. The club tour ed each member's chicken barns to see their chickens and pick out enough birds tn hnve three ludginff classes at the Talent pre-fair. Follow ing the tour, Mrs. Tiegs serv ed hot dogs and lemonade. We played croquet until it was dark. No date has been selected as yet for our next meeting. Linda Mullin, Reporter Marion County Judge To Leave Hospital Salem IUPD - Marlon County Judge Rex Hartley, 59, wal to be released from a Salem hosplUl today after several weeks of rest and observation. He entered the hospital last month after suffering sever chest pains. Medical authori ties said he was tested but no heart condition was found. The Judge will continue to recuperate at home for an Indeterminate period.
