hazard list,
"If you know what you're
doing, you can have burgers
without husEiirds In your back
yard," Phil Dykstra, said In
an Interview.
"But cook-out accidents are
Increasing and It's a afo as
sumption that more than a
few cook - out chefs don't
know what they're doing."
Barbecue Burnt
The accidents arc the burn
ing kind - causing injury to
persons and property.
For the cook-out, Dykstra
suggested the following safe

-situate the grill on solid

hedge or foliage that will help
break the wind. Don't put it
In a place where It will block
traffic.
-to get the lire started the
safest way, use the time-honored
wood shavings.
-never use gasoline, kero
sene or lighter fluid to start
a lire.
-keep a bucket of sand near
the grill. Use it to douse any
lire caused by the flaring up
of grease.
-keep only one pint of liq

ses at one time. Only adults
should use such liquids.
-dress for the Job, wearing
a large, fairly heavy apron,
pot holder type gloves and
nothing frilly, A denim apron
Is best.
Dykstra said most barbecue
burns arc caused by the flare
up ol fire touched oil by the
tipping and splattering of
grease.
Wind Whips Coals
I Other accidents are caused
by strong blasts of wind whip
ping the hot coals Into flames
and directing them toward the
cook.
Where the children are con
cerned, Dykstra suggested the
firmest parental discipline.
Toddlers most often burn
themselves by touching or
tipping the grill.
"The children should be
taught that the grill is off
limits until they are old
enough to realize the danger,"
he said.
Francis B. Elder, associate
director ol the American Pub
lic Health association, made
additional suggestions.
Sharp - pronged cook - out
tools shouldn't be left in a
place where a person can trip
over them. Don't let guests -adult
or Juvenile - use the
tools for horseplay.
"It's all meant in lun," he
said, "but a playful jab with
a long-pronged fork can go
wild and injure an eye."
Electric Grill
Elder urged caution when
using an electric grill that's
hooked up with extension
cords from inside the house.
"When the grass is wet or
the hands arc wet, grabbing
a makeshift connection may
cause electrocution."
The experts warned against
hitting the panic button, if an
accident does occur.
If clothing catches fire, do
n't run. Roll on the lawn.
If the accident is a little
one, causing a minor burn,
cleanse it and apply ointment
or petroleum jelly.
More serious injuries re
quire a doctor's attention to
head off possible Infection
and after-scarring.
