year totaled $9,761,392, an in.
crease of $3,666,630 over the
1958-59 total, according to
the building department's
year-end report.
Included in last year's total
is the $4,693,616 cost of the
new Rogue Valley Manor.
Had it not been for the manor,
total construction last year
would have been slightly less
than the previous year's total
Of $6,094,762.
The city does its business
on the basis of the fiscal year
which runs from July 1 to
June 30.
- Most major categories of
construction were down last
year. Included in the decrease
are new home construction
and new business construction.

Courses Are Taken
Applications for the school
of practical nursing are being
accepted, according to Lind
say M. Vinsel, director of
adult education in the Med
ford public schools.
The course is sponsored by
the Medford public schools
and is available to all persons
between 17 and 50 years of
age who have graduated from
high school or can pass the
general educational develop
ment test.
The course consists of 534
hours of classroom instruc
tion, and 1,302 hours of clini
cal training.
Registrations also are be
ing taken for two-year courses
in automotive mechanics and
in electronics. They will begin
in September.-The automotive
course will include all phases
of auto mechanics and the
electronics course is designed
to prepare persons for em
ployment as highly skilled
technicians.

Action on a proposed va-
cation of an alley between
Hawthorne and Genessee sis.,

council Thursday night until
its next regular meeting.
The decision to postpone ac
tion on the alley wns taken
after a resident w h o owns
property abutting both ends
of the alley said he was op
posed to vacation by the city,
Attorney Paul Haviland,
representing E. W, Brown,
who opposes the move, said
that although the allcy'does
not now have much use, It
will have in the future when
the value of the property as
a business area should go up
and the alley would be a val
uable asset as a means of serv
ing the property.
Attorney George Rode, rep
resenting those who favor va
cation, said that five property
owners whose property abuls
the alley favor the vacation.
He said the aliey has only a
5 Va foot wide entrance on
Genessee St., making the use
of the alley "physically im
possible." '
The alley has only one en
trance. It is L-shaped and
dead-ends in the middle of the
block.
Rocommtndtd Approval
The city planning commis
sion had recommended to the
council that the vacation be
approved as the city has no
interests in the alley.
City Attorney Joel Recdcr
said vacation of the alley
would not require 100 per
cent agreement of the adja
cent property owners because
action to vacate the alley was
initiated by the city.
Rode said the adjacent
property owners want to de
velop the alley as part of
their own property.
The council elected to per
mit the Evergreen Bus Lines,
Inc., to discontinue its East
Jackson-Spring sts. run, and
go back iO using the West
Main-Eighth sts. route as a re
turn for the west side run in
stead of Columbus ave. and
west Jackson St.
City Manager Robert Duff
said the manager of the bus
company, L.R. Pilchcr, had
said in his written request for
the change that, "it appears
the majority of the people in
Medford do not want bus ser
vice." The company wanted to
discontinue these specific
routes. Duff said, because the
"company finds the routes un
profitable and not used."
Not Catching On
Councilman Donald Hanson
said that for some reason bus
service is not catching on in
Medford. He said he was not
try-ng to tell the company
how to run it business, but

The council said that public
hearings will be called before

their views known.

city of Jacksonville. Duff
pointed out that the city's In

doubtful, and It was not
worth much to the city any
way. A proposed amendment to
the city code to provide for
sidewalk planters was defer
red to the next meeting pend
ing further study.

1959 electrical code which Is
the same as the 1957 code
which Is now In effect. There
are no changes in the local
amendments to the code, Duff
pointed out.

sion subdivision. This subdi
vision, Duff said, is proposed
for vacation so the tract may
be resubdivldcd. The matter
was also referred to the plan

st. along Bear creek to the In

and Siskiyou blvd., he rec
ommended that the lot be pur
