Kach article is a summary of an artual case history. The Council reports on problems that have been dealt with by responsible agenctet and counselors. Mil. L.P. - He should ig nore his skin problem. Bob P. - I get sick to the stomach when I look at my self. a a Mm, L.P. - My husband and I are terribly upset about our oldest boy, Bob. He is 16 and recently developed a terrible case of acne. He is under the doctor's care and we are hope ful Uiat he will soon be cured, but we are worried about his state of mind. Since this thing developed his schoolwork has- dropped and he is avoiding all his friends. We learned that he has played hooky several times because he is ashamed to show himself. We have tried to convince him that he doesn't look as bad as he thinks, but he ig nores us. Many other boys and girls have the same problem but they don't react this way. He has always been on the shy side and this has made him worse. How can we persuade him to ignore it? Bob P. - Ignore it! That's a laugh. Every time I look at myself in the mirror I get sick to the stomach. I make every one else sick too. I was passing some little kids the other day and they started yelling, "Pimples!" I'm sick of hearing my par ents nag me. What do they want of me anyway? I can't hang around with the gang be cause they all date and no girls are going to date me the way I look. At least if I stick to myself until I get better, maybe I won't disgust people. This way everyone will always re member me the way I was. Tht) Council: Most doctors today feel that one of the con tributing factors to the skin problems of adolescence is emotional turmoil. Teenagers undergo a great deal of stress and strain and this affects glandular activity. Unfortunately, the skin problem In itself tends to pro duce more emotional difficul ty and a vicious cycle is start ed. The very worst thing is con centration on the problem. It's good that Bob is being treated by a doctor, but he should be told that there is no quick, magical cure. He must recog nize that his skin will not be clear in a day, a week, a month and probably not a year. In the meantime, he should accept the fact that he has a slight physical handicap -fortunately one that will even tually disappear. But he must do what every boy or girl with a physical handicap should try to do - forget it and de velop whatever skills and abilities he has. It takes cour age and fight. Parental nagging won't help. The one topic of conver sation to be avoided in this family is skin. The topics to be brought out are the things that interest Bob. These may be anything from camping and fishing to music and the arts. Whatever makes Bob's eyes light up with interest is a life line. Encourage him to join a group which works along the line of his interests. Get him to read and investi gate things for himself. Shy youngsters rarely re spond to the injunction to "make friends," but they often make friends naturally when they get caught up in something that interests them.
