Oregon Students
Show Superiority
Portland -(UPD- A study of
comparative achievement test
scores by the University of
Oregon school of education
faculty has revealed that Ore
gon students show a supe
riority over the same aged
students in other states.
The study was made of stu
dents' testa in grades 6, 8 and
11. The study was delivered
by Ray Lewis, research as
sistant at the University, to
the Legislative Interim Com
mittee on Education Thursday
ight.
Lewis said that in the ele
mentary grades, Oregon
achievement scores were as
much as a full grade above
the national norm in reading
and more than' a half grade
above the norms in arithmetic
and language.
Lewis labeled the findings
as enlightening and said Ore
gon has made a really signif
icant gain in achievement
since 1050 when a similar
comparison was made."
In 1950, Oregon was found
to be below the national
norms in the sixth and eighth
grades.
Belton Addresses
egion Convention
Seaside -(UPD- State Treas
urer Howard Belton told the
42nd annual state convention
of the American Legion
Thursday that the Legion is
making a "very great contri
bution to society and the per
petuation of the American
way of life."
He said this is important
because of the cold war and
the fight between two phi
losophies, "one based on the
supremacy of God and the
freedom of the individual . . .
the other on the supremacy of
a Godless slave state."

Stevenson Van
Arrives Here Late
The "Adlal Stevenson Mo
bile Headquarters," en route
to the Democratic national
convention in L o s Angeles,
stopped briefly in Medford
late last night.
Delayed by receptions and
press coverage at earlier stops
in Portland, Oregon City, Sa
lem and Eugene, the big truck-
trailer pulled up at the Med
ford hotel about 11:30 p.m.
At least two small groups
of Stevenson for President
supporters, who had been
awaiting word of the van, dis
covered it there, and talked
with the Washington state
Stevenson reporters before
they pulled out shortly after
midnight to keep northern
California appointments.
The trip, organized by the
Washington State Stevenson
committee, is designed to
drum up enthusiasm for Gov
ernor Stevenson's "draft" at
the convention, and to pro

workers in Los Angeles.
