Morse Apartment oofed of Jewels Washington -0IPD- Washing ton police today investigated the theft of jewels and a fur coat worth more than $1,400 from the apurtmcnt of Sen Wayne Morse (D-Ore.) during the week end. Morse reported to police Tuesday that the thieves took such care not to disturb any thing that the break-In wasn't discovered until Mrs. Morse returned from a week end trip. Mrs. Morse found that her Jewelry box had been rifled and a mink stole taken from closet. Youths Questioned After Seen Smoking Four youths were ques tioned by city; police early this morning for Illegal pos session of tobacco after they were observed walking eost on West Main st. near Fir st. by a Medford police officer. The boys, two 17-ycar-olds from Wcovcrville, Calif., and Junction City, Calif., a 14-ycor-old rom Poolvlllc, Tex., and a 15-ycur-old from Archer City, Tex., told police they were not aware of the smok ing law. They were questioned by police and their cigarettes were taken. They were later released. Two Appear in District Court Hurry Howard Cray, 69, of the White City Domiciliary, was bound over to the Jack son county grand jury on charges of grand larceny when he appeared in district court yesterday. ( Gray is charged with tak ing a man's wrist watch from Brophy's Jewelry store, 209 East Main St., Monday. Gray .waived privilege of an attorney and preliminary hearing. He is being held in the Jackson county jail on $1,500 bail. Lee Walter Dew, 62, ot 3ia West Jackson St., Medford, was sentenced to nine months In jail for petty larceny. He appeared in district court yes terday. District Court Judge E. Koy Bashaw recommended Rocky Butte tail in Portland. Dew pleaded guilty to iaK- ing seven cartons of cigar ettes from a Medford mantel June 20. Tho case of George Everett Allen, 48, of the White City Domiciliary, was continued to July 21 in district court. Al len is charged with petty lar ceny. Police Receive New Traffic Citations Medford police last week received 10,000 of the new uniform traffic citations which arc being used by all police agencies in the state as of July 1. The first of the new cita tions to be given out by the Medford police department was Issued Friday night to a Grants Pass man. He was cit ed for a basic rule violation. Chief of Police Charles P. Chamrjlin has expressed satis faction with the new tickets and said they seem to be a lot simpler and more efficient than the tickets the depart ment was using previously. He snys the department Is finding that those cited like them better also because they are easy to understand. The twins, George and Charles, 48, told the Cali fornia Supreme Court that the daughters of actress Lana Turner was being restrained illegally at the El Retiro School for Girls for the knife slaying of Mlsi Turner's boy friend, underworld figure Johnny Stampanato. George, accompanied by Charles, filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus. He said he was acting as a friend, but others close to Cheryl were surprised by the move. The girl's father, Stephen Crane and an attorney for Miss Turner said the action came as a complete surprise to them. Ashland Man Found Claude Rozelle Curtis, 79, of 900 Park St., Ashland, was released from Ashland Gener al hospital late yesterday after being taken there after he was found beside his cur, state police said. Curtis, who apparently had suffered a heart attack, was found by a weighmaster be side his car on Highway 99 near Jackson Hot Springs, po lice said. Confession Is Doubled "I have not seen a written copy of Mr. Finn's statement, so I will refrain from answer ing it until then. But I am not going to let Lana talk to any one about this. I will do all the talking for her." In the petition, Finn charged that Cheryl was be ing held solely on the basis of her confession that she stab bed Stompanato to protect her mother during a quarrel in Miss Turner's bedroom April 1958. Finn said lt would have been a physical impossibility for a 14-year-old girl to have committed the crime. Her case would have been dismissed on grounds of In sufficient evidence had she been tried in an adult court," the petition said. Cheryl was sent to the school in Sylmar, Calif., by a juvenile court, but has run away twice. Many Court Battles The Finn twins are old hands when it comes to court battles. The two war veterans pur chased a war surplus cargo plane to use for teaching pur poses in 1951. The govern ment ruled the sale illegal on the ground that the plane could be used only for scrap- and the legal fight was on. During their 10-year battle, the Finns stood guard on the plane with rifles and pistols, went on a hunger strike in iail. and once handcuffed U.S. Attorney Laughlin Waters in Los Angeles while making a citizen's arrest. Last year George tried to make a citizen's arrest of Col. Gordon Moore, Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower's brother-in-law. The twins filed suit against the government last year for I more than $20 million dam ages in connection with the I plane sale.
