Dominican Armed
Forces Engaged
In Maneuvers
Ciudad Trujillo, Dominican
Republic - Wit - The Domini
can army, navy and air force
Saturday were reported car
rying out extensive military
maneuvers, including the test-
firing of "guided missiles.
The republic officially was
proclaimed in a state of na
tional emergency.
President Gen. Hector B.
Trujillo signed into law the
proclamation passed by con
gress after he charged that
Venezuela was preparing a
movement against the Domini
can Republic leading to war.
Venezuela broke off diplo
matic relations with the Do
minican governmental earlier
this year, accusing it of inter
ference in Venezuelan inter
nal affairs.
Tensions Heightened
The tensions were heighten
ed recently by Venezuelan
charges that the Trujillo re
gime was implicated in the
attempted assassination o f
President Romulo Bctancourt
last week and an abortive
short-lived revolt earlier.
Four ship9 carrying infan
trymen and artillery sailed
Friday from the Dominican
naval base of Calderas for an
undisclosed destination.
A naval spokesman said the
movement was "routine ma
neuvers." Today, army, navy and air
force troops carrying weapons
and other military equipment
were seen in the streets of
Ciudad Trujillo. The ministry
of armed forces said the troop
movement is part of "big mili
tary maneuvers" and urged
the population not to be
alarmed.
