Nelson A. Rockefeller was supplying political am munition to the Democrats with his attacks on policies of the Eisenhower administra tion. Morton conferred with the President about plans for the GOP convention. Of Rockefeller, Morton commented: "I do not agree with the substance of Gover nor Rockefeller's attacks on the administration and I think it is unfortunate that he keeps giving the Democrats ammu nition. I certainly think he is not speaking for the Republi can party or any large seg ment of the party. "Of course, he has a right to criticize. I don't think, how ever, that it is hurting the party: in fact, it is solidifying the party." Morton said his conversa tion with the President was I confined to plans for the GOP convention in Chicago. ! Earlier, Morton said the de cision by Former President Harry S. Truman to resign as a Missouri delegate at large to the Democratic National Convention was the tip-off to a "deal" among the Demo crats to a ticket of Sen. John F. Kennedy and Senate Demo cratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson. Morton, who also is a GOP senator from Kentucky, said the tip-off was former Presi dent Truman's announcement that he would not attend the Democratic convention open ing July 11 in Los Angeles. Further Proof Seen The decision of congression al leaders to recess the Senate and House for a month and come back to work after the political conventions was fur ther proof of a "deal," Morton declared in a statement. "It seems clear from all in dications that a deal has been made and there will be only one ballot in Los Angeles," he said. To the suggestion that he might accept the vice presi dential nomination. Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson (Tex.) had this comment: "The silly season is on and I'm sorry it is affecting people i wno otherwise would talk I more sense." A spokesman for Sen. John F. Kennedy (Mass.), current front-runner for the Demo cratic presidential nomination, declined to comment on the Morton statement. Morton said Truman's an nouncement Wednesday that lie was resigning as a conven tion delegate "is proof that he sees the handwriting on the wall and rumors of the Kennedy-Johnson deal that have been floating around Washing ton are true." Truman has endorsed Sen. Stuart Symington (Mo.) for the Democratic presidential nomination. He said he would explain his reasons for not at tending the convention at a news conference Saturday. $600 Million Surplus Possible At Close of Treasury's Books Washington - IUPD - A fed eral budget surplus ' which grew and grew may be as hefty as $600 million when the government's books close at midnight on fiscal 1960. Final figures on revenue and spending will not be available to government of ficials for several days. But indications were good that His Hobby Brought Trouble With Law Buffalo, N.Y. - Arnold Jan uary testified that he had a drinking problem eight years ago and was advised to take up a hobby. "So I took up betting," Jan uary said. January's horse activities were found to go beyond just betting. He was convicted in City Court of bookmaking. the surplus could climb to $600 million, , and possibly even higher. When President Eisenhow er 18 months ago presented his budget for fiscal 1960 it envisioned a surplus of $70 million. Few people then thought it could be achieved. By last September, the of ficial forecast had edged up to $95 million. It jumped to $217 million in January, 1960. In the past few days admin istration officials have said that the surplus would be AIPORT RUNWAT SINKS Tokyo -IUP1I- Tokyo Interna tional Airport's main runway has sunk as much as 3.3 feet in the past 14 years, creating a hazard to incoming air planes, it was disclosed in a report today. greater than the January esti mate, but they have declined to say how much greater. It will mark the first time since 1957 that the federal budget has been in the black and the third time in the sev en fiscal years of the Eisen hower administration. The reason for the unex pectedly large surplus is that tax revenues have poured in at a heavy rate. The total tax intake may even hit the $78.6 billion estimate of January, which later was discarded when corporation taxes ran Burglar Promises Installment Payments Syracuse, N.Y. - Police said a burglar who took $21 from a branch library left a note promising to repay the money in installments of $5 each. about $600 million below ex pectations. A surge in individual in come tax colle tions has about made up for the short fall in corporation taxes. Expenditures are expected to total slightly less than $78 billion, about $400 million less than forecast. Much of the savings was made possible by unexpected export sales of government - owned surplus farm products which had been running up huge storage bills. Paul Lynn Moore, 18, of 628 Palm si., entered a plea of guilty to a charge of dis orderly conduct in municipal court this morning and was fined $25. The four other boys, aged 16 and 17, were confined in the Juvenile de tention home. All five admitted to police that they shot grapes through blow-guns at Harold W.
