Q o SECTION B MEDFORISIlTRfBUNK iUtUtORU, OKEGON', THURSDAY, JUNK oU. iuUU Strikeout Record Had By Dodgers Philadelphia - HOT - Despite gags to the contrary, Phila delphia was anything but a dull town Wednesday night. Sad maybe, but not dull. Aided by a Frank Howard howitzer shot, a record num ber of strikeouts and relief rescue performances by Lar ry Sherry and Ed Roebuck, the fifth-place Dodgers defeat ed the Phillies in a twi night twin bill, 6-3 and 5-2. Tonight, it'll be the regular single game, starting half an hour late because of some pre-game entertainment from Count Basie and his band. Vice President Richard Nixon will watch as Danny McDevitt (0-1) pitches against Jim Owens (3-8) for the seventh place Phils. Howard, the youthful pow erhouse from Ohio State who looks like he should have been an All-America tackle instead of the university's top basketball player, apparently has found the slugger's groove. He hit his 10th homer of the season in the first game and drove in three of the Dodgers' six runs with three hits in four trips. Larry Sher ry received credit for the vic tory after replacing Don Drysdale in the seventh. Drysdale gave up only four hits in his 6 13 innings. Sandy Koufax won the sec ond game, although Ed Roe buck was sent in to handle the Phils for the final two innings. Drysdale had 7; Sherry, 5; Koufiix, 10; and Roebuck, 2. Dodger bat ters struck 10 times in the two games. Drysdale, counted on at the start of the season to be the club's ace, has failed to win a game in more than a month. Despite his poor record. 4-10, the lanky fastballcr leads the league in strikeouts. Another strikeout artist, Koufax, now has a record of 3-8, no better than Drysdale's. Koufax also was expected to be a mound mainstay for Man ager Waller Alston. STANDINGS United Press International NATIONAL LEAKUK V. Why did the Old West's settlers bring Sunny Brook Cleveland s in Ameri BY TIM MORIARTY United Press International Since the start of the sea son, New York Yankee scouts have been whispering "watch the Orioles" into Casey Sten gel's elephant-sized ears. But Ole Case and the rest of the Yankees had better start worrying about the Cleveland Indians. For while the Orioles are showing signs of skidding, the Indians are flying. The Tribe, behind the six hit pitching of rookie south paw Dick Stigman, bounced back into second place in the American League race Wednesday night by handing Baltimore its third straight defeat, 5-3. The loss dropped the Orioles into third place by a single percentage point. Cleveland now has won seven of its last nine games but over that period Manager Joe Gordon has gotten only two route-going jobs from his prized pitching staff. And both of these efforts were turned in by Stigman, who PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE W.
