For shallow diving or speerfiahing, down to 10 or 15 feet, all that is need ed is a tight-fitting face mask with a glass win dow, flippers to help the diver control his move ments under water, and a breathing tube to breath while floating. It is not necessary to be a crack swimmer. With some practice, the begin ner will learn to hold his breath for a minute or more while he swims down. To stay under longer, or for diving deeper than 15 feet, a 'lung" or self-contained breathing apparatus is re quired. For diving with the "lung," an adjustable weight belt is needed to adjust to body's buoyan cy. This belt, as well as the "lung" should be held on by quick-release type buckles. Other Equipment Strongly recommended additional items include strong sheath knife, a depth guagc and water proof walch, protective garments for wear in cold water, and an inner tube or float, with an anchor line and weight. The standard tank used with a "lung" holds enough air for about one hour under water near the surface. Most sports diving is at 30 or 40 feet or less. At such depths marine and fish life is more abundant, the water is warmer, there is usual ly enough light for good visibility and the diver does not need to worry about decompression problems. Strenuous Sport Skin diving is a stren uous sport and cells for considerable exertion un der water. But experts say that anyone who' is in good health need not hesitate to try it. Just be sure to observe the few: Have a complete physi cal check-up before div ing with a "lung!" Never dive alone - use the "buddy y s t e m.' ' PURSE - A large, roomy bag is a bonus for the traveler. This style in soft, grainy calf is easy to tote no matter how much is stowed away inside. Know where your buddy is at all ttmes. - Master diving with fins, mask and snorkel before attempting "lung" diving. Familiarize your self with all equipment. Practice with it in shal low water. Use only quick - release buckles. Practice getting out of them quickly. When using underwa ter breathing equipment breathe slowly. Never hold your breath when surfacing from any depth.
