Watkint In the Days News By FRANK JENKINS In thii column the other day, the fascinating and rath er tragic story, of the boring of a two-mile tunnel through a point of land on the Feath er River back in the 1880's in order to drain an 11-mile stretch of the river's bed so the gold in it could be taken out easily and speedily, was told. Let's tell today the story of another proposal to drain another river. The time was about 1851. The river was the Klamath. IEGAL NOTICES Here's the Story Of an Ant Rescue She was snuggled closely In a tight soft capsule. Her lix legs were folded close, her antennae pressed back against her head. Getting out of the envelope was a task that call ed for all her infantile strength. Once the elastic sheath was off, she stretched out her legs, raised her antennae, and look ed around. Other baby ants were emerging from other grayish-white crypts. All were weak and wobbly. By some strange chemical process, silent, sure, and rapid, strength flowed through the slender bodies. The limbs stiffened; the in sects moved under their own power. Adult ants hurried past the youngsters, paying them no attention. It was very ant for itself. Up the inclined passageway the adult ants clambered to DAVID Restauranl Supplies & Equip. 315 N. Vic David disappear somewhere up there in the upper world where the sun was shining. The newly hatched ants followed their elders, on legs that were still wobbly, out into the grass jungles, each learning the technique of food gathering. Gained Strength Most of the young ones made it by following the ex ample set by the adults. How ever, there seems to be one in every crowd for one ant, very young, very immature, decided to "got it alone." The grass-blades towered over its head like the trees of a forest. The tangled jungle of grass stems impeded its progress. It struggled on, finally lost its way. Confused, it started to run and stagger in circles like a man lost in the forest. Evidently it never crossed its own scent-path or the one laid down by other ants from its home-colony. Nothing was familiar. The world, to the youngster, was very large and terrifying. She just didn't know the way home. The en thusiasm of youth and inex- perience gave her a false courage, and instinct still slept. , Entangled in Web The young ant gave every indication of becoming fran tic. Trying to climb a grass stem it fell, became entangled in a length of spider web. It struggled until complete ex haustion rendered it power less to move. It was on its back, its legs moving feebly, completely spent, tangled in a silken cord. It was there the adult ant from the home colony found the youngster. It scrambled over the prostrate form, then hurried away through the jungle of grass stems for home. But strangely enough, and in complete defiance of hu man explanation or under standing, the adult ant, along with three helpers, came back to the rescue. With expert skill they picked the young Witnesses Deny 'Deal' To Help Convict McDonald Oregon City - (UPD - Three state witnesses denied Mon day they made any "deal" to help convict Levi S. McDon ald in connection with the dynamiting of newspaper trucks in exchange for light sentences or possible reward money. The testimony came at the trial here of McDonald, strik ing member of the Stereo- typers' Union, who is charged in connection with the dyna miting of six newspaper trucks Jan. 31. Gets 'No Answers . Defense Attorney Richard Carney received answers of No when he asked: . . . Edward ' Eugene Sny der if Multnomah county of ficials offered to help him get a share of the reward money offered for arrest and convic tion of the dynamiters if he would implicate McDonald. . . . Charles Henry Snyder if he confessed to carrying out the dynamiting plot only after he made a deal with the Mult, nomah county district attor ney. Testified Earlier . . . William Snyder if he had not implicated McDonald in the dynamitings in return for promises by the district attorney's office. All three testified at the earlier Portland trial of Mc Donald in which he was con victed in connection with dy namiting of four trucks serv ing the struck Oregon Jour nal and Oregonian. McDonald has appealed the Portland conviction. THE proposal was to divert the Klamath down through the Lava Beds and on south ward into the Pit. The basic idea was that by diverting the Klamath into the Pit and thence into the Sacramento the summer flow of the Sacramento would be augmented enough to make it possible to bring the gold supply boats as far up as Red ding, thus eliminating the 30- odd mile packtrain haul in the summer season of low water from Red Bluff, then the head of summer naviga tion, to the gold diggings of Shasta and Siskiyou counties. one up and carried her back to the home-colony. Of all the thousands of ants in the colony, a single in dividual was missed or acci dentally found. Either way, the rescue was carried out. Back from the wild jungle of the grass stems, the novice was carted home. N ORDER to bring all this about. It was proposed to create a NEW STATE which would be carved out of Far Northern California and Far Southern Oregon. It was to be called the State of Shasta. In Friday's piece it was pointed out that the Feather River miners, once the idea came to them, hesitated only momentarily before tackling the stupendous job of boring a two-mile tunnel through a mountain ridge-a job that took nearly five years and cost in the neighborhood of a million dollars-in order to drain an 11-mile strip of riv er so as to get at the gold in its bed. THE Klamath diversion dream was approached in the same spirit. It was argued that the job would be comparatively easy, as the terrain was adaptable to the project, sloping in the right direction and except for the lava beds not too diffi cult in the way of excava tion. So- The miners said LETS GOI The project go into the f i r st California legislature and the bill would probably have been enacted into law but for the fact that this first California legislature got so busy with other pressing things that it never got around to creating the State of Shasta. So it died, along with a lot of other proposed legislation So far as known, that was the origin of the idea of creating a new state to be carved out of Far Northern California and Far Southern Oregon.
