suprapubic in 614; perineal in
43; and retropubic in 16. Im
portant is the observation that
the mortality rate for the
transurethral operation was
1.8 per cent; while for the
retropubic it was 6.25 per
cent. Death usually was due
to a heart attack or a blood
clot lodging in the lung.
Some experts complain be
cause, in some cases, a few
years after a suprapubic op

go back for another operation;
but others say that it is better
to have two operations with
a very low risk than one with
a fairly large risk. Other ex
perts have reported that in
their hands, the big opera
tions have been performed
with a mortality under 2 per
cent.
