The new traffic code goes Into effect July 1 with Its uni form traffic violation ticket and a new schedule of bails and fines. "Although this will be harder on some traffic law violators it will be easier on those charged with compara tively minor infractions," Ba shaw said. "Much more of the traffic court business can be done by mail under the new system. It will be possible to accept pleas of guilty or Innocent and to consider statements mailed in by witnesses. Based on this evidence, it will also be possible to determine how much the bail or fine should be." AU of this Is explained on the back of the new uniform traffic ticket. A new minium bail sched ule also has been established. Minimum bail for registra tion and license violations is $5. Now it is from $10 to $15, generally. Minimum fine now for first offense of driving while li cense is suspended Is $105. Presently this increases to $255 for the second offense and jail for any subsequent offenses. The new schedule sets a minimum fine of $150. Minimum fine for hit and run violations will increase from $50 to $150. The minimum fine for driv ing while under the influence of. intoxicating liquor will drop from $500 to $300, ac cording to the recommended code. However, Judge Bashaw said in his court it will still be $500. Other violations will bring a minimum fine of $15. The district court judge em phasized that this bail sched ule is merely recommended to establish a uniform practice throughout the state's traffic courts. Ultimately It is up to the discretion of the presiding judge. Using the recommended bail schedule, the arresting officer will write out the minimum bail or fine for each offense. This will act as a complaint so. will eliminate much of the paper work done by the dis trict attorney's office now as well as saving the various po lice agencies and courts time. 4-H Club News Cracker Jacks The last regular meeting'of the Cracker Jacks 4-H club was held to plan our picnic. Kathy Rentz served refresh ments and we made scram bled eggs. , On June 23, the picnic was held at Hawthorne park. Wie ners and Pepsi Cola were served for lunch with all the trimmings of olives and pickles. We also had ice cream. California Man Is Returned Friday Benjamin Herbert Erskins, 26, was extradited Friday by Orange county, Calif., au thorities on charges of armed robbery, the Jackson county sheriff's office reported Sat urday. Erskins had been held here on $52,000 bail while await ing extradition. He is wanted for his part of a series of grocery robories early in 1058, the sherffs of fice said. H'.s two partners were arrested in 1958 and sentenced to the California state penitentiary. Gold Hill Man Enters Guilty Plea in Court Robert Howard Christensen, 19, Gold Hill, pleaded guilty in district court Thursday to charges of petty larceny and imposition of sentence was suspended for six months. Christensen was arrested by sheriff's deputies Wednes day night on charges of tak ing a revolver and holster Sunday from the home of Glen Purinton, box 131, Rogue River. A new ceramic-coated muf fler is said to be good for 100,000 miles and to be low enough in, price for use on passenger cars. Local Man Among High Shooters at Ft. Lewis Fort Lewis, Wash.-Lt. Paul J. Blair, Medford, was the third highest individual shoot er in the 41st Infantry Divi sion's first annual pistol match, won by the Second Battle Group, 186th Infantry. Lieutenant Blair tired a score of 298 as his team post ed a comparatively easy win with 1,162 points. Also on the four-man team was Sgt. Du ane D. Franklin, Medford, who had a score of 277. Both are members of Company E of Medford's National Guard unit, here for two week's sum mer camp. Other scores on the win ning team were Capt. Horace J. Pendergrass, Eugene, 285, and Sgt. Howard McWhorter, Roseburg, 3 0 2. McWhorter was second in the individual competition, Second in the team stand ings was the First Battle Group, 162nd Infantry, rep resented by four shooters from St. Helens. Their score was 1,030. The victory in the pistol match gave the Second Battle Group, comprised of National) Guard units from Medford, Grants Pass, Roseburg, Eu gene, Corvallis, Lebanon and Cottage Grove, a clean sweep in the shooting competition. Earlier, the unit had taken the annual 41st Division rifle trophy by upsetting the dead ly eastern Oregon shooters, who had won nine straight years. Pfc. Larry Lane of Rose burg and MSgt. Jack Burns of Central Point fired on the winning rifle team. The Lena River, largest in Siberia, flows 2,700 miles from the Baikal Mountains to the Arctic Ocean. Jrs.
