Latter-day Saints Establish Two Wards in Medford Area The Medford ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was divided into two wards at a ward con ference Sunday, June 19. Car roll W. Smith, Ashland, Kla math stake president, presid ed at the event. The establishing of a sec ond ward in Medford was . made on the recommendation of stake officers and approval of the general church authori ties in Salt Lake City. Mem bership in the Medford ward had reached 1,000 members, it was reported, which neces sitated the division. Bishops, counselors, and clerks were elected for the two wards meeting. Walter H. Jensen, White City, will be bishop of the First ward with Arthur C. Knudsen and Gor don L. Westwood, counselors. David L. Peterson will be clerk. Dr. Dwaine E. Nelson, pres ent bishop of Medford ward, will become bishop of Second ward. His counselors will be E. M. Skipworth, Phoenix, and Rolen Rosecrans, Gold Hill. Paul Ashby will be clerk. Boundaries The First ward will en compass roughly that area west of the railroad tracks from Beall lane south to Four Area Men to Attend Missouri Synod Meeting Three Medford men will represent the Jackson county area at the Northwest District Convention of the Lutheran church - Missouri Synod at Concordia college, Portland, June 27 to July 1. They are Al Hunlemann of St. Peter's Lutheran church and the church's pastor, the Rev. John E. Simon, and Wil liam Cody, who will serve as 178 Attend Local Adventist Schools Enrollment in the two Seventh-day Adventist Vacation Bible schools reached 178 Wednesday, June 22. There were 97 registered In the Medford school and 81 at Val ley View, according to direct ors, Mrs. Clarence Hayward and Mrs. Burton Brooks. Three classes, kindergarten, primary and Junior, meet each day from 9 to 12 noon for Bible study, character build ing stories, and various games, crafts and hand work. Wednesday the schools were visited by Pastors E. J. Bergman and W. J. Harris. Pastor Bergman Is Sabbath School secretary for the Ore gon conference with head quarters in Portland. Pastor Harris is an associate secre tary In the General Confer ence Sabbath School Depart ment In Washington, D.C. The men conducted a workshop Tuesday evening in the Med ford church for all Sabbath school workers In the south ern part of the state. Tri-Church Youth To Meet Saturday The young people of the Ashland, Talent and Medford Friends churches will hold their first meeting at Uie Tal ent Friends church Saturday, June 25, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be led by James Bentley and LaNora Downey as co-chairmen. Mu sic will be furnished by groups from the three churches. Stanley Perisho of the Medford church will lead the music session, The Rev. Dean Gregory, general superintendent of the Friends churches of the North west, will be guest speaker. His subject will be "Old , Things and New." Pastor Clynton Crisman, Medford, will present the pro gram of the summer confer ence of the churches to be held at Fir Point near Glen dale, Ore., from June 27 through July 4. Interim Pastor Gets Church Appointment Hornbrook - Appointments announced last week at the annual conference of the Methodist church held at Stockton, Calif., Included that of the Rev. William Ogden to return to the pulpits of the Hornbrook and Montague Methodist churches. Mr. Ogden has been serving the two churches on an in terim basis since February, when he replaced the Rev, William Small who was trans ferred at that time to the church at Biggs' Calif. Mr. Ogden and his wife Marlon, and soni Weley.013, and Bill Jr., 10 months, came to the local churches from Camden, Ark., and are living In tht parsonage at Montague. " ) WALTER H. JENSEN Firil Ward Bishop South Stage rd. This ward will use the present chapel building at 648 South Ivy st. Trie Second ward will include east Medford, Central Point, Gold Hill, Phoenix, Shady Cove, Prospect, and Eagle Point. The two wards will meet together for the next two weeks, it was reported, when delegate from Grace Luther an, Ashland. The Rev. Albert Nickodemus, Ashland, will also be present. The convention opens with the convention service and holy communion Monday eve ning al Trinity Lutheran church, with the Rev. Dr. Ar thur Nitz of San Francisco, fourth vice president of the Lutheran church - Missouri Synod, preaching the sermon. The doctrinal essay of the convention on The Holy Spirit in the Life and Work of the Church" will be pre sented by the Rev. Dr. Fred Framer, professor of theology at Concordia seminary, Springfield, 111. To be approved by the dele gates is the new circuit ar rangement proposed for the fast - growing district. The Southern Oregon circuit, of which St. Peter's of Medford and Grace, Ashland, are mem bers, will have an additional congregation - that of Lake view - under lis Jurisdiction. Present counselor of this cir cuit is the Rev. John F. Si mon, Medford. He is one of 14 counselors serving the dis trict under its president, the Rev. Carl 11. Bensene, Se attle. Baptists Schedule School Program The closing program for the primary and junior Vaca tion Bible school of r irst .bap tist church will be held to night at 7:45 o'clock. The general theme of the school has been "Signaling for Christ," Willi the primary Bible lessons centering around Bible Bonis" and the juniors, "A Christian's Walk and Talk." Mrs. Larry Adams has been general superintendent. At the close or the program parents and friends will have opportunity to view a display of handwork done by the children during the past two weeks. Sunday both messages will be given by the Rev. Ed Stauffer, pastor. The services are held at 11 a.m. and al 7:45 p.m. Music will be pro vided by the aduii ana youm choirs. Sunday School classes for all ancs are held at 9:40 a.m.; youth meetings for junior through college age are scneo uled on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Superintendent To Preach Here Sunday The Rev. Ed Aschenbron ner, district superintendent of the Eugene district, will preach at First Methodist church at the 9:3" and 11 a.m. services Sunday. He will speak on "Loyal To The Highest." After the 11 a.m. service the congregation will go to the parsonage for the dedica' tlon service on the new Meth odlst parsonage. Coffee will be served after the dedication conducted by Mr. Aschenbrenner. The youth choir will sing "Holy Redeemer" at the 9:30 a.m. service and the chancel choir will sing "Welcome, Dear Redeemer" for the 11 a.m. service. Mrs. Keith Jon- son will sing "When I Think Upon Thy Goodness" for each of Ihe worship services. Methodist men will meet on Thursday noon at Ihe church with Kenneyj Blair as separate schedules will be an nounccd for the two wards to hold meetings in the same chapel. Own Property According to Smith, the church owns five acres of property at Delta Waters rd and Crater Lake highway which lias been designated for a stake . center and ward chapel. The Medford ward was brought into the Klamath stake organization in 1952 During that year the present chapel was constructed with membership at about 600. Prior to that time the local work was a mission unit. Dr. Nelson has been bishop of the Medford ward for Wi years. Assisting Smith at the con ference last Sunday were the two stake counselors, Ronald E. Phair, Klamath Falls, and Dennis Ray Hassell, Ashland. Friends Church Plans Promotion Sunday will be promotion day in Sunday school at the Friends church. All grades from kindergarten through high school seniors will be promoted to new teachers for the church year beginning July 1. Certificates will be award ed to those graduating from the beginner, primary and junior departments. Pastor Clynton Crisman will give the messages in the worship serv ices at 9:45 and 11 a.m. The praise and worship service at 8 p.m. will be led by young people of the church who are students at George Fox college. Ken Kumasawa will show slides of the cam pus. A male quartet, Stanley Perisho, Lary Smith, Jack Hamilton and Ken Kuma sawa, will sing. Other students participating in the service will be Bayard Stone, Nadine Brood, Dan Nolta and Don Chitwood. Camp Sa-wa-li-nais will be gin Tuesday at Fir Point, near Glendale The Fir Point campground was recently purchased by the Friends churches of Medford, Ash land, Talent and Eugene. The bus for camp will leave Tues day at 9 a.m. Young people from 10 years old through high school are eligible to at tend. Camp ends July 4. Central Church Tells Sunday Events "Trees In God's Garden" will be the theme of Sunday morning's message at the Cen tral Church of Christ, North Central ave. at Jackson St.. The speaker will be John V. Heberling, minister of the church. The 11 a.m. worship hour will also include a gos pel solo by Mrs. Ruth Hover, Wonderful Saviour. Bible school will begin at 9:45 a.m. There will be class es for all ages. Youth and adult classes will study "The Firm Foundation," Matlhew 7:24-29. The evening activities will begin at 6:30 p.m. w'th junior, intermediate and senior youth groups. Worship at 7:30 p.m. will feature gospel singing and a message by the minis ter entitled "The What and When of Christian Worship." Vacation Bible school will conclude next week with final sessions 1 to 3:30 p.m. Mon day and Tuesday and closing program Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Parents and friends are in vited to attend the program. Gospel Mission To Have Board Meeting Meeting of the general board of the Medford Gospel Mission will be held Tues day, June 28, at 7:30 p.m. In Ihe First Methodist church, 607 West Main st. The public is Invited. The president of the North Pacific District of the Inter national Union of Gospel Mis sions. John Pcdersen, Klam ath Falls, will speak. Music will be supplied by the Faith Advent Christian church. A report on the Mis sion will be given, and re freshments will be served by the Methodist Women. mm r school The Vacation Bible school of the Ooen Bible church. Ta ble Rock rd. and Midway dr., will start Monday, June 27, and continue through July 1. The school will meet from 9 to 11:30 a.m. with a theme of "Jesus and Me. PASTOR TO SPEAK The Rev. Clifford Young, minister of Eastwood Baptist church, will speak Sunday at 11 a.m. on "Marching to Zion." Mr. Young and about 20 young people of the church arc expected to return bauir- day from a three week trip to Mexico, Communion, Dedication Set By Presbyterians The sacrament of the holy communion will be observed at both of the morning serv ices at the First Presbyterian church Sunday. Dr. D. Kirk land West's communion medi tation will be, "What Is Life For?" At this service over 50 new members who have been at tending classes in church membership will be welcomed into the fellowship of the church. Douglas Cummings at the organ will be heard in selec tions by Bach and Mrs. Stan ley Lacy will direct the chan cel choir in an anthem at the 11 a.m. service, "Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God." Mrs. Charles Champlin will sing, "Come to Me," an arrange ment based on a Beethoven Sonata, for both services. Junior Highs, who will at tend camp at Lake of the Woods, will meet at the church at 2 p.m. Sunday for rides. Youth Fellowship for sen ior high young people will meet at the church at 7 p.m. Sunday for a report on the Senior High conference at Lake of the Woods Fireside will be at the home of Maggie McCollom, 1425 Whitman st. Westminster At the morning worship service at Westminster Pres byterian church Sunday there will be a dedication of the newly installed electronic or gan. "Jesus Christ - Resurrec tion From Life's Futility" will be the subject of the sermon by the Rev. John O. Reynolds. This is the last in a series of sermons on Jesus' great words about himself. During the service Mrs. James Rowan and Mrs. Rafe Anders will sing the duet "I Waited For the Lord" and the junior high chorus, under the direction of Mrs. H. D. Chris- tenscn, will sing "Spirit of God Descend Upon My Heart." Sunday school classes will begin at 9:45 a.m. There are classes for all ages through adult. The adult class will continue its study of various little -known religious sects. The second week of Vaca tion Church school will begin Monday al 9 a.m. with classes for kindergarten 5-year olds and primary children. There will be no junior department this week. The public is invited to at tend an organ concert to be presented on Tuesday, June 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the church. Mrs. Gladys Waldron Gilbert, Portland, will be the guest artist. Westminster Pre sbyterian church is located on Oakwood drive between Barneburg and Groveland aves. Open House Tonight For Bible School Open House for the Bible school will be held in the side auditorium of the First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly st., from 7 to 7:30 o'clock tonight. Work books and crafts that the boys and girls of the Bible school have made will be on display at that time. A dem onstration program will be presented by the children at 7:30 p.m. in the church sanc tuary. All parents and inter ested friends are invited to attend. The Bible school has been In progress during the past two weeks with Mrs. A. M. Miller supervisor. More than 200 children have been en rolled. Ascension Lutheran Announces Picnic "Intelligent Disclpleship'' will be the sermon subject Sunday at Ascension Luther an church at both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services. The Rev. Elvln S. Tfct public Is Invited to attend. I f t DR. P. M. HAMMOND Methodist Minister New Minister at Ashland Church Ashland Dr. P. Malcolm Hammond has assumed duties as minister of First Methodist church of Ashland. He arrived June 10. Dr. Hammond has for six years been the district super tendent of the Methodist Churches of southern Idaho with residence in Boise. He has served Methodist churches in Oregon in previous years in Oakridge, Toledo, Wood burn, and Portland. Mrs. Hammond is a former deaconess in the Methodist church serving in Pennyl vania. They have two married children, Mrs. Gilbert V. Oliv er, Seattle, and Dr. Phillip E. Hammond of New Haven, Conn., on the staff of Yale university. Dr. Hammond received his bachelor of arts degree from Willamette university, a bach elor of sacred theology degree from Boston University School of Theology, and a doctor of philosophy degree from Boston University Grad uate school. He taught in Lew is and Clark college, Portland, for four a half years. Adventists Schedule Closing Exercises Closing exercises for the Seventh-day Adventist Daily Vacation Bible school will be Thursday, June 30. The Medford group will have a program In the church al Edwards and Beatty sts. at 8 p.m. The Valley View church is holding its school in rooms at the Rogue River Junior academy on South Stage rd. and the closing pro gram will be there at 7:45 p.m. Thursday. Certificates will be award ed to all the boys and girls who have attended the schools. There will be dem onstrations of songs, Bible memory work, and crafts which have been part of the Vacation Bible school activi ties during the past two weeks. Ashland Minister To Convention Ashland - The Northwest District of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod will meet in convention at Con cordia college, Portland, June 27 to July 1. Grace Lutheran church, Ashland, will be rep resented at the convention by its pastor, the Rev. Albert Nickodemus, and by a lay delegate, William Cody. Approximately 400 pastors, teachers and lay delegates will be present representing the 175 Missouri Synod Lu theran Churches of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska. Church of Christ Topic Announced Central Point-"What Are You Worth?" will be the 10:45 a.m. worship service sermon topic Sunday at Church of Christ, Third and Oak sts., Central Point. Mr Jean M. Shelley, minister, will speak. At 7:30 p.m. Sunday the pupils who have been attend ing the Daily Vacation Bible school will present a program. Prior to the program the work of the various depart ments will be on display from 6:30 p.m. Awards will be given and an offering will be taken to defray part of the school's expenses. Attend Convention Mr. Evans and the Rev. Glenn McKerrow will both attend and have a part in the program at the state conven tion at Turner which begins Tuesday. Mr. Evans will give a sermon on "The How of Evangelism" and Mr. McKer row will have charge of the devotions for one of the ses ROLLAND H. SHEAFOR To Assist Church Board Member to Discuss Building Rolland H. Sheafor will meet with members of the First Christian church July 1 to assist with plans for the church's building program. Mr. Sheafor is vice president and secretary of the board of church extension of the Chris tian churches with headquar ters in Indianapolis, Ind. The board of church ex tension is set up for the pur pose of helping churches in erecting new buildings, re modeling, and refinancing church debts. More than one-, third of the Christian church es in the United States, Can ada and several foreign mis sions countries have been aid ed with loans from this board. The local church is making plans for building a new church on their property on the old Crater Lake highway. St. Luke's Tells Sunday Activities Sunday morning services at St. Luke's Methodist church, 2940 Siskiyou blvd., will be held for Sunday school at 9 o'clock and the worship hour at 10 o'clock. ' The Rev. Mclvin Dixon, minister, will preach on the subject "Perils to One Talent Success!" During the service St. Luke's congregation will join Methodist churches through out America in receiving a special offering for the Chil ean Disaster relief. Junior church is held for first through fourth graders and supervised nursery is also provided for pre-school chil dren during the service. Monday through Wednes day, Mr. Dixon and the fam ily, will unite with other min isterial families of the Eugene district of the Methodist Church for the annual retreat at Dead Indian Soda Springs camp. An open house will be held on Thursday, June 30, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. This will give everyone an opportunity to meet the teachers and see the work the children have been doing. Coffee and cookies will be served. A free-will offering will be taken to help defray the cost. Three Churches Announce Events Rogue River - The Rev. Robert Maxson, minister of Hope Presbyterian church, Rogue River, will speak Sun day on "The Last Day" at both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services. Central Point - The Rev. Robert Olmsted, minister of Central Point First Presby terian church, attended Synod at Lewis and Clark college, Portland, this week. He will return to the valley to speak at the 9:30 a.m. worship serv ice Sunday. The all church picnic will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Faber on July 12. Jacksonville - The Rev. and Mrs. King K. Jones, ho are attending the Senior High camp at Lake of the Woods, will return Saturday after noon. Mr. Jones' sermon title for Sunday at First Presbyterian church, Jacksonville, worship service is "From the Moun tain to the Valley." There will be a report from the confer ence by some of the young people who attended. The choir will sing "How Great Thou Art" with Dave Allen as the soloist. Fifteen Junior High young people will meet at the church Sunday at 1 p.m. to leave for Lake of the Woods to attend a week long conference there. They will be accompanied by Mrs. Clara Graham who will be one of the counselors. Other meetings at the church this week are the regu lar monthly Session meeting to be held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday school teacher's meeting on Thurs day at 8 p.m. Offering Saturday For Mission Program June 25 is "Thirteenth Sab bath" in the four Seventh-day Adventist churches in the Rogue Valley. At the end of each quarter the Sabbath School members view a mission program by the children's divisions and unite in an offering for a designated area in the church's world-wide missions pro gram. Specific projects this quarter are an evangelis tic center in Yugoslavia, a church in Mozambique, and a new mission home and water supply for the church's Mun guluni mission in Mozam bique, Africa. Nazarenes To Have Promotions Sunday Sunday will be promotion day in the Sunday school at First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly st. Children of all classes will be promoted to the next age group. Those who will be advanc ing to a new department will be honored in a cap and gown ceremony and be presented with a certificate of promo tion. Those having had per fect attendance during the past year will receive recog nition. The Rev. The sermon by the Rev. Thomas McCamant will be on the topic "When Com mon Tilings Are Not Com mon." This is the last Sunday when regular classes will be held in the church school. However, the junior high class is taking a week end trip to the coast to finish their season. After this there will be a unified program in charge of various parents for the younger children, and old er children will be expected to attend church. Tomorrow evening there will be a picnic sponsored by the Fun and Fellowship club at the Dr. B. R. Elliott ranch on Hanley rd. This will be a famiiv affair nnrt all are wel come. Those who attend should take hot dogs or ham burgers and buns, and eithr dessert or salad. Arrival time should be 5:30 p.m. or as soon thereafter as convenient. The final session of the current membership class will be held Tuesday at 8 p.m. The joint vacation church school with the Westminster Presbyterian church con tinues through a second week, except for the junior class and the four year olds. Par ents will be invited to visit on the final day, Friday, July 1. Summer Workers At Brethren Church The Medford Church of the Brethren has added two sum mer service workers from La Verne college, at La Verne, Calif., to its staff. The service workers are both juniors at the Brethren college. They are the Misses June Ellen Davisson and Karen Klessig. They are presently assisting in the summer program by making a religious survey in close proximity to the church. The survey is primarily in the interest of the Vacation Bible school to be conducted July 11 to 22. The two women are also assisting in the youth pro grams and are presently en gaged in preparations for the summer camps. Sunday the high school youth will present a camp night program at 8 p.m. The program will be a dramatiza tion of a day at camp closing with the camp fire scene. Twenty young people in two groups are planning to attend the summer camps at Camp Myrtle Wood near Bridge, Ore. The camping ses sions will begin June 27 and continue through July 9. Young People Leave On Trip to Temple Forty young people of the wards of the Klamath stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints left Ash land this morning by charter ed bus for a week end visit to the Los Angeles temple Between 8 and 10 of the young people are from Med ford. According to Stake President Carrol W. Smith, Ashland, the young people will do baptism work for the dead at the temple. Accompanying the young people south are Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Mr. and Mrs, Ronald E. Phair, Klamath Falls, and Mr. and Mrs. Den nis Ray Hassell, Ashland Phair and Hassell are stake counselors. Those attending are to taka fried chicken or a talad. Butte Falls Church To Hear Guest Speaker Sunday Butte Falls The Rev. Louis Collins, Central Point, will give the message at the Sunday morning service of the Butte Falls Community Bible church. The regular pastor, the Rev. Howard Simmonds, and his family are on a five-weele leave of absence to visit churches in Nebraska arid Kansas before stopping in Denver, Colo., for visits with relatives and friends. They will attend the Village Mis sionary conference at Can non Beach, Ore. before return ing home the second week In July. Young people are planning a joint meeting with tha young people of the Trail Community church, Saturday evening at Trail. School Program Last Sunday evening mark ed the close of the Daily Va cation Bible school held In the local church the past two weeks. Mrs. Harry Dalton was in charge of the program. Ap proximately 60 children from the ages of four through tha eighth grade attended the reg ular sessions. Twenty-three students re ceived perfect attendance cer tificates. Following the pro gram parents and friends vis ited the various classrooms to view the crafts on display made by the children during the School. Village Light Circle met at the church Tuesday afternoon and prepared two boxes of baby clothes for shipment to the Rev. Phares Huggins fam ily who will take them to a Christian orphanage in Sase bo, Japan. The Huggins sail on the S. S. Tar Heel July 1, after a year's leave of absence here in the United States. - Eastwood Baptist ? Plans Bible School1 Daily Vacation Church school will be held at East wood Baptist church, 1390 Ridgeway dr. June 27 through July 1, from 9 to 12 noon. There will be classes for children who were four years by November, 1959 and through sixth graders. The theme of the school will be "The Church." Tha sharing project will be tha "Oregon Migrant Ministry". There will be singing, stories, handicrafts, recreation and snacks. An open house will be held Friday evening. The work tha children have done will be on display, the teachers will ha in attendance to meet the par ents and the evening will close with a fellowship hour. 'Galilean' Service; Planned Saturday;: Eagle Point-The Assembly of God young people will hold a "Galilean" service Sator day, June 25, at the TouVella park. The service will start with a picnic lunch at 5:30 p.m. followed by games. At 7:15 p.m. the Rev. Mar tin, Rogue River, will be guest speaker. Mrs. Harry Krueger will be In charge of the service. Young people are Invited and transportation will be furnished by contacting the Rev. Troy Cambron at Hill crest 6-3252, A PREACHER . . was greatly distressed ever a member of the congregation who wasn't attending services. He went to his home and found him sitting alone by the fire place. The man, being some what startled by the intrusion braced himself for the expected rebuke. But not a word way spoken. Taking his seat before the fire, the preacher silently took the tongs and lifted a glowing coal from tha midst of Its fellows, placing It on the hearth by Itself, end watched the blaze die out.
