Thompson called the solid
GOP vote against the confer
ence a "repudiation of Nixon
in no uncertain terms."
The vice president's press
secretary told newsmen last
week that Nixon was working
with House GOP leaders to
clear the way for a conference
on the school legislation,
Thompson and other Demo
cratic backers had counted on
Rep. B. Carroll Reece (R-
Tenn.) to vote for the confer
ence because he had voted to
clear the House bill when it
was stalled in the rules com
mittee earlier this year.
No Immediate Comment
Nixon had no immediate
comment on the situation. So
far, it was learned, he had not

committee reversal.
The Senate-House dispute
over school legislation centers
on aid for teachers' salaries
and an a n 1 1 - segregation
amendment.

Peace Emissary

rebel leadership will send
their advance peace emissary
to Paris probably before the
end of the week, informed
Tunisian sources said today.
The sources said Tunisian
officials were putting heavy
pressure on the rebels not to
let protocol problems inter
fere with the first promising
chance In five and a half
years to end the Algerian war.
The Algerian rebel leader
