(UPI Telephoto) Malta's Independence Demand Increases Headache for Britain London- (UPI) -Britain's out size burden of colonial head aches is being stepped up by new independence demands from tiny but strategic Malta. The. fortress island colony, which until the nuclear rocket age held the defense key to the Central Mediter ranean, is clamoring again to join the swelling ranks of former British possessions which have become independ ent nations. But Britain, which has ruled the island for 148 years and which decorated it with the coveted George Cross for standing up lo Hitler's dive bombers throughout World War II, thinks differently. Sees No Future The British government sees no future as an inde pendent nation for Malta's 350,000 population crammed into an area of less than 100 square miles. Eighteen months ago Bri tain suspended Malta's con stitution and withdrew limit ed internal self-government because the Islands -poli Scientific studies prove that frozen foods retain their flavor . . . and their vitamin content . . . better than foods preserved any other way! Since then the island has been run by the British Gov ernor. Next month Lord Perth, minister of stale in the Brit ish Colonial office, is sched uled to visit Malta to seek agreement with Maltese po litical leaders that would make internal self-government possible again. But Dom Mintoff, fiery, 44-year-old, Oxford - educated leader of the Maltese Labor Party and the Island's most prominent politician, has re plied that he will be satisfied with nothing short of total in dependence. Stems From Argument Mintoff had quit as pre mier in April, 1958, and from then onwards no Maltese poli tician was willing lo form an alternate government, lead ing to the constitution sus pension in January, 1959. The rumpus stemmed from an argument over the amount of financial subsidy paid by Britain to the impoverished island which lives" largely from British handouts. Curiously, the row follow ed a vote by the Maltese in February, 1956, for complete political Integration with Bri tain, But Mintoff demanded an increased British financial subsidy as the price. New fuel was added to the dis pute in the spring of 1958 when Britain decided lo close down : Malta's huge naval dockyard, which provided a livelihood for about one eighth of the population. Blow Softened When Britain suspended the constitution last year she softened the blow by an nouncing an $81,200,000 (M) financial subsidy to help out a five-year economic develop ment program for the island. The dockyard was turned over to a British commercial com pany for repair work for merchant shipping. But the dispute has embit tered relations between Bri tain and the island and, in particular, with Mintoff him self. Mintoff said that the only proposal from the British government in which he is interested is complete inde pendence. But there is noth ing to indicate Britain is pre paring to offer it.
