Information will prob ably be exchanged between the University of California researchers and those in the Rogue valley, Cordy said. The decline problem here is more complicated, Cordy said, than that of Washing ton's. The Rogue valley prob lem involves a virus infection and a graft union problem re lated to culture. Some soil fungus has been discovered working on orna mental plants, Cordy ex plained. Some of the same trouble has been found in pear orchards, the horticultural agent said. Although cultural methods used were not discov ered as detrimental earlier they did favor the compara tive recent development of soil fungus, Cordy said. The decline problem also in volves the improper use of water and fertilizer, he added. Several local orchards have shown material Improvement through use of new practices recommended by the research team here. However, in Wash ington trees with the graft decline have never recovered, he noted.
