Walter, c o m p lained that today too many trans fusions of blooci are be ing given. He said that now adays more people die of t r a nsfusions :i than of uppen a dicitis. The deaths are bad enough, but no one knows how many more hundreds of people there are who, after having been given a blood transfusion - of doubt ful necessity later, after from two to six months, came down with a dangerous attack of hepatitis. No one is ever going to give me a trans fusion unless, at the time, the need for tt is very great. Simplicity Helps Ailhmalic Many years ago, Dr. Van Leeuwen of Holland told me that he had been struck by the fact that when he put a dozen wheezing patients with an all-year-round type of as thma into a hospital, half of them promptly got well. Why did this happen? The doctor soon decided that it must be because a hospital room is monastic in its simplicity, without drapes or carpeting, or stuffed furniture, or any thing to produce or gather dust. ' Also, the mattress on the bed may be made of some harmless new synthetic sub stance; they are not full of the feathers, that are often so harmful to asthmatics. Also, the patient may have left at home his cat or dog or para keet. Having discovered these factors that produce asthma (not due just to pollen), Van Theater Manager's $40 Fine Upheld Portland - (UPD - C i r c u It Judge Paul R. Harris Thurs day upheld a judgment of the Municipal Court against the manager of the Guild Theatre. Judge Harris upheld a $40 fine by the Municipal Court against Nancy Welch, man ager of the Guild, for failing to delete "objectionable" Scenes from the French movie The Lovers." The ruling came In the form of a dismissal of a demurrer filed by Miss Welch's attor ney, Bernard Shevach. The demurrer attacked the consti tutionality of the ordinance on state and federal constitu tional grounds. Shevach indicated he planned to appeal. 3 :00 Dance J:15 Peul Wlnchell 1:30 Herald of Truth 4 00 All Star Golf 5:00 Taste for Office 8:30 20th Century 6:00 Adventure Tomorrow 6 30 Maverick 7:30 Lawman 8:00 GE Theater 8 30 Alfred Hitchcock Present! 9:00 Jack Benny 30 What'! Mayo CliaM Leeuwen had his patients clean out their rooms at home, and perhaps get rid of their pets. In some cases he had the pillows and mattresses en closed in plastic covers. Then the doctor found that if he sent a dozen asthmatics - sen sitive to pollen - high up into the Swiss mountains, most of them promptly got well. And so he built an apparatus to go into the patient's bedroom window - an apparatus de signed to filter out pollen. Today electrical apparatuses to do this have been devised by several companies.
