Isabel R. - I am 15 and mis erable at home because 1 can't get along with anyone in my family especially my father. iviy moiner ana my Kia brother are against me, but ' the worst is my father. He smacKS me around lor tne least thing I do. If I come home late from a date, he . yells at mv bov friend and slaps me in front of him. I can't hold my head up among my friends any more. I really hate my father and feel I might go crazy if I go on living at home. I know my aunt would let me come to . wnillrl nllnur it. Rut mv mnth. er screams at me whenever I mention it. Mm T.. TJ. Its true that my sister ' might be willing to take Isa hnl fnf o urhllo Kut T toai l.n. - place is home with her own family. My sister is burdened with four youngsters of her ' own. The Council: Mrs. L. R. Is ngni aDoui tne tact mat Isa bel's place is with ner family, but she should be aware that a temporary change of envir onment often brings many emotional benefits. Isabel Is evidently going through a painful period ot adolescent stress and nrobably has little control over her tongue or her actions. Her fiery explosions rouse her father's anger and Isabel, feel ing she has merited hatred from him, insists that she is the one who hates. At bottom, Isabel, like all girls, desires love and appre ciation from her family - Dar- ticularly her father. She and her father have now formed a ; habit or pattern of inter- . change that simply doesn't al- 1 low a breakthrough of the love they undoubtedly have for one another. We don't think hitting is often a good form of punish ment. Too frequently it gives the parent the feeling that misbehaviour has been dealt with when it has merely been shoved aside for the moment. A constantly misbehaving child is having trouble inside himself and it is the parent's responsibility to find out what it is. Hitting is a particularly . poor kind of punishment in ' dealing with adolescents. Pride is a big point with them. . Teen-agers want so much to , be grown up that it hurts -deeply when their parents treat them like children. It is : especially important for an adolescent girl to feel that her father considers her an attrac tive and lovable young lady, Mr. L. R. could win his daugh ter's love and respect and mold her into a happy, loving woman If he would praise her whenever and for whatever he can. He should be stern . about dating hours, but avoid , humiliating Isabel or creating . a crisis about the subject. '. A temporary separation-.." may prepare the ground for a new relationship. ; (Copyright 1960, General Features Corp.)
