The Pittsburgh Pirates took a two-game grip on first place with a 6-3 win over the San Francisco Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Cincin natl Reds, 6-3, the Chicago SF Giants Cause Hurt By Errors By HAL WOOD San Francisco - (UPB - Billy O'Dell, the hard-luck man of the Giants' pitching staff, goes out tonight to try to stop the Pittsburgh Pirates from mak ing a runaway of the National League race. Trailing by two games after last night's gift of a 6-3 de cision to the Pirates, the San Francisco club is banking on the brilliant southpaw to put it back in the running. O'Dell has won only two games while losing five. But he has allowed only 1.8 earned runs per nine innings he has pitched. However, the way the Giant defense has been working in recent games, that doesn't mean much. Jones Loses Last night Sam Jones al lowed lust one earned run in the five Innings he worked. But when he left the mound for a pinch-hitter, he was trailing, 2-5. And he had to take his fifth loss against eight wins. The winning pitcher was Bob Friend, who captured his eighth against three defeats. But he got a lot of help from his infield, which snuffed three Giant rallies - in the fourth, sixth and seventh in nings - with double plays. The key that spelled victory for the Pirates came in the second when, with the bases loaded and two out, Willie McCovey let a ground ball go between his legs. 'That's what beat us," said Manager Bill Rigney. "They got three runs when they shouldn't have had any. Mc Covey is strictly a one-handed player." SPORTS NY Charges LA Chargers With Deceit New York -UPD- Ed Mc Keever, former Notre Dame coach, is the center of the latest pro football con troversy, In which the New York Giants charged the newly-formed Los Angeles Charg ers with "bribery, fraud, de ceit and double dealing." These accusations were con tained in an amended com plaint submitted by the Giants in their suit against the Chargers over the signing of All-America fullback Charley Flowers of Mississippi and Jim Varnado, a fullback from Southern Louisiana univer sity. The Giants' complaint was filed in the District Courts Of Northern Mississippi and Cal ifornia. The suit is due to come up in Mississippi later this month. The Giants, East ern Division champions of the National Football league, hold a temporary injunction re straining Flowers from play ing with the Chargers, an en try in the new American Foot ball league. McKeever now is general manager of the Boston Patri ots in the AFL. Olson, Knight Winners In Junior Golf Matches Doug Olson and Rich Knight, Medford, won cham pionship flight matches in the boys' division yesterday In the Oregon Golf association junior tourney at Riverside club, Portland. Olson defeated Dick Davis, Lebanon, 2 and 1, and Knight won from Jim Lucas, Astoria, on the 19th hole. In other boys' division matches involving Medford entries, Larry Novak, San tiam, downed Tom Clark 1 up in the second flight, Larry Berg whipped Milton Daugh- erty, Roseburg, 1 up in the eighth flight, and William Collins beat Don Hood, Royal Oaks, 4 and 2 in the 10th bracket. Russ Taggard, Columbia Edgewater, subdued Stan Dowson, Medford, 3 and 2 in the second flight of the junior division. The Indians war-whooped by Tacoma, 5-4, in Pacific Coast league action Tuesday night to hang up their 14th victory in their last 16 starts. Odds Favor Ortiz In Ring Encounter By DON THACKREY San Francisco -IUPD- Duilio Loi, veteran little campaign er from Italy, battles 23-year-old champion Carlos Ortiz of New York and Puerto Rico to night for the world's junior welter weight crown. And the odds favor the champion at 11-5 to retain the title lie won when he knocked out Kenny Lane just a year ago. The bout, to be nationally televised, will be staged in the Cow Palace and a crowd of about 8,000 is expected to be on hand, paying $35,000 to watch two battlers with the finest records in their division.
