ORE. o .8 Paul Pender Keeps Middleweight Toga Br JACK CUDDY Boston (UPD Co-middleweight champion Paul Pend er, who clubbed the fading Sugar Ray Robinson into sub mission in the clinches again Friday night, sought a shot at the light heavyweight crown today instead of a title-clearing fight in his own 160-pound division. Rangy, dark-haired Pender of Brookline, Mass. - who is recognized as middleweight champion in Massachusetts, New York and, most foreign countries - challenged ancient Archie Moore for a crack at his light heavyweight (175 pound) title. The former Brookline fire man, who won another split 13-round decision over New Yorker Robinson in their re turn title fight at the Boston Garden, said, "I'm not inter ested right now in a title fight with Gene Fullmer. I'm rec ognized as champion in most of the world. If Fullmer wants to challenge me, he knows my address." Fullmer, of West Jordan, Utah, is recognized as cham pion by the National Boxing association. Could Fight at 169 Pender, who weighed 160 pounds - exactly the middle weight limn -against Kobin ..son's 158fe, Friday night, ttressed that he could come Into the ring at an effective 169 pounds for a fight with 44-year-old Moore of San Di ego, Calif. "I'd like to fight Archie in October," Irish Paul ex plained, "if Archie keeps his title against Erich Schoppner of Germany at Toronto on July 18." Although Pender had to be content with another split ver dict, like the one he took in his first victory over Robin son at the Boston Garden on Jan. 22, he beat the nearly washed up Sugar Ray far more impressively this time. It seemed from the sixth to the 14th round that Robinson would be knocked out instead of merely outpointed. Sugar Ray appeared completely helpless in the clinches-and they were in clinches through out the fight. Clubbed Sugar's Head Pender pulled and hauled and clubbed the back of Sugar Ray's head and his body with short rights in every round and the once-great Robinson, 39 or 40, wilted until it seemed he might collapse from exhaustion - as he did in his 1952 hot-weather shot at Joey Maxim's light heavy weight crown. Thus it was that Robinson suffered for the first time the loss of a rematch. Pender won the decision on a 10 points basis when judge Jim Carrig favored him 149- 138 and judge John Savko agreed, 147-142. But referee Jimmy McCarron had Robin son ahead, 146-144. McCarron explained later to reporters that he had taken "some points" away from Pen der because of his "rabbit punching" to the back of Rob inson's head. The United Press Interna tional preferred Pender, 146- 141; and a poll of 26 ringside writers showed 17 for Pender, eight for Robinson and one even. YOURS FOR Uncertain Future for Sugar Ray Boston-IUPD-Sugar Ray Rob inson's future was in question today after failing to regain his Massachusetts-New York middleweight title from Paul Pender. In his dressing room after Friday night's split decision loss, Robinson said he had to have some time to think about the future. "I'm going back to New York without any idea of what my plans are," Rob inson said. He added that he wanted another crack at Pender, but that this time it should be in his home state of New York. A tired former middle weight champion of the world said he had given Pender two chances in Boston and that Pender should now give him a chance in his home state. However, Pender and his manager, Johnny . Buckley, said they were not the least bit Interested in a rematch. Pender, wrapped in towels and sporting a cut over his left eye, had no compliments for the officiating. "Robinson kept holding and clutching. I asked the referee to get rid of him, but he didn't have any strength to break : the clinches," said Fender. Hartack Is Sarcastic After Race United Press International New York-Willie Hartack, racing's angry young man, was at his caustic best after booting Celtic Ash to victory over Venetian Way Saturday in the Belmont Stakes. However, the controversial jockey insulted only one man and one horse - indirectly. Asked if he felt trainer Vic Sovinski did him a favor by dropping him as Venetian Way's rider after a disappoint ing fifth-place finish in 'the Preakness, Hartack snarled: He didn't do me a favor. I would have got off that horse anyway." After piloting Venetian Way to victory in the Ken tucky Derby last month, Har tack warned newsmen, "Don't call me Willie and don't ask any stupid questions." He is sued no such ultimatums yes terday but eyed reporters suspiciously throughout the post-Belmont interview. Only Congratulation Eric Guerin, who finished last aboard Tooth and Nail, was the only rider who con gratulated Hartack in the Bel mont Park jockey quarters. "Nice ride," Guerin said as Willie wiped the dust from his face with a large sponge. Hartack nodded and said: "Thanks, Eric. I was afraid he (Celtic Ash) was going to take off on me on the back stretch and I had a tough time holding him. I moved outside at about the half-mile pole so I'd be in a position to let him run and at the three eighths pole he really cut out (took off)." Report To College Players are to report to the Southern Oregon college net courts by 9 a.m. Saturday. The draw will be posted there and the time for each match will be indicated. All women's singles will be contested on the Lithia park courts, including the finals which a"re to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Boys singles will be started on the high school courts and the second round will be played at the park fa cility. All other matches will take place on the college courts both Saturday and Sun day with finals set for 1 p.m. Sunday. Balls will be furnished by the tournament sponsors and trophies will go to all cham pions and to runnersup in sin gles. Players and their families are invited to attend a tennis picnic near the net courts in the park on Saturday at 7 p.m. It will be potluck. Drinks and ice cream will be furnished by the club. Prior to the picnic a tennis clinic will be conducted for boys by Southern Oregon college coaches. Whitworth Wins NAIA Tourney Sioux City, Iowa - (UPD -Whitworth college, behind the pitching of Ray Washburn and Tom Ingram, shut out Georgia Southern, 4-0, Satur day to win the 1960 NAIA small college baseball cham pionship. Washburn pitched only three innings but he struck out the nine batters who faced him, running his tournament record to 43 strikeouts in 19 innings. He allowed only five hits in the tournament and was not scored upon. Ingram took over for Wash burn in the fourth inning. finished the game and was credited with the victory. DEER WARNING GIVEN Portland - (UPD - State game commission officials have urged Oregon residents to quit "adopting" apparently motherless young deer. Offic ials explained the fawns are left in hiding spots by the mothers. The mothers, offic ials reveal, return to them for feeding and general protec tion later. Medford Junior Legion Triumphs Over Roseburg Medford Post 15 American Legion junior baseball team opened Its season yesterday with a 5 to 1 and 2 to l douoie header sweep over Roseburg at Memorial stadium, White City. A three-hit four -run first Inning and Herb Wheeler's one-hit pitching made the dif ference in the first tussle. Medford had Roseburg pitch ing wildness to thank in the other.
