(UPI Telephoto) Aquati Red Cross Plans tic School At Camp Mivoden Camp Mivoden on Hayden lake, Idaho, is one of three western locations selected again this year by the Amer ican National Red Cross as a site for one of its 28 national aquatic schools to be held throughout the nation during the summer, Dr. William Rob erts, chairman of water safe ty services for the Jackson county chapter, has announc ed. The Camp Mivoden aquatic school will be held from June 26 through July 6, and is ex pected to attract students from Washington, Oregon, and Montana, as well as Ida ho. Instructors have been se lected from among authorities in the fields of aquatics and safety. Students can attend the aquatic school at their own expense or as delegates of organizations " such as' Red Cross chapters, civic clubs, youth grdups, and others in terested in teaching safety practices, Dr. Roberts point ed out. Teaching Technique Students will learn teach ing techniques which will help them pass their safety knowledge on to others in training classes in their home communities. They will also receive instruction In camp waterfront and swimming pool leadership and in com munity organization. Candidates majoring in wa ter safety instructor training should hold current senior lifesaving certificates or pos sess better than average swim ming ability. Candidates maj oring in first aid training may receive a first aid lnstruc- storship without previous first id training. No swimming activity Is re quired of students in the first aid section. Dr. Roberts said. Instructorship in both first aid and water safety may be ob tained if the candidate al ready has both a current sen ior life-saving and a current standard first aid certificate and provided he or she is a strong swimmer. The 10-day course includes regular schedules of classes, sessions for instruction, prac tice and practice teaching. Provisions are also made for well-rounded program of recreation, he said. "The necessity for training Dersons to avert water tra gedies is pointed up by three trends, Dr. Roberts declared "These are increased popula tion, especially in the lower age groups: increased avail ability and use of swimming facilities; and increased small craft activity. "With the American peo- nle's greatly increased inter est in water sports, and with accidents keeping pace with the growth in population, there is a constanly increasing need for instructors in both the aquatic field and the fields of first aid and accident pre vention." he stated. The Red Cross conducts the national aquatic school pro gram to train instructors for community swim programs for summer playgrounds, youth organizations, park de partments, public service firouos. schools, and other community agencies. Approx imately 3,000 persons from all states of the nation are trained each year. Frantic Bridegroom Delayed by Police Huntington Beach, Calif. - William R, Curtis, 19, was in an awful hurry to get married. Police managed to slow him down. After a wild midnight chase. officers caught up with Curtis who was driving to Mexico with his 17-year-old girlfriend to get married. The youth was arrested af ter it was learned he had no drivers' license, had been giv en a speeding ticket a short time before and had been stopped and warned for speed ing before that by five patrol units. FRIDAY and SATURDAY! DOWNTOWN MEDFORD! amp Workshop Is Planned Course Ashland - A special two- week workshop on outdoor camp leadership will be offer ed June 13 to 24 at Southern Oregon college. Dr. Bill Samp son, director of summer ses sion, has announced. The workshop is planned specifically for camp coun selors, leaders, advisors, teach ers and administrators inter ested in school camping. In structor Dan Bulkley, assist ant professor of physical edu cation, said the workshop will emphasize camping skills, with both classroom work and outdoor participation planned. Activities to b covered in clude naturecraft, cookery, ropecraft, woodcraft, games, art, and many other camping skills. Specialists in the vari ous crafts will act as con sultants in the field, Bulkley reported. Three quarter hours of up per division college credit will be granted for successful completion of the workshop, and arrangements for auditors are possible. The workshop may be taken in conjunction with regular summer session offerings or individually. Inquiries concerning the camp leadership workshop may be directed to Dr. Samp son, Southern Oregon college. Applications Being Taken for Camp Ashland - Applications are being accepted for tiie fourth annual session of the Siskiyou band camp, to be held at Southern Oregon college July 17 through 29. Guest director of the band camp this year will be Ran dall Spicer, director of the Cougar band of Washington State university, Pullman, Wash. Spicer is considered one of the nation's top au thorities on band music. The Siskiyou band camp Is comprised of three divisions: junior, senior, and graduate. The Junior and senior divi sions are for junior and senior high school students. There will be a band organized from each group in addition to aca demic music studies. Spicer will conduct a seminar in band teaching methods for college and graduate students. Inquiries for further infor mation may be addressed to Dr. Herbert Cecil, Siskiyou band camp.
