Kemmerer, Baumann Brilliantly For White Pay Off Sox By FRED DOWN United Press International The Chicago While Sox have come up will) their own "new faces" to meet the chal lenge of the Baltimore Orioles' "kiddy corps." They're Russ Kemmerer and Frank Baumann, pro moled only recently from the bullpen to bolster the White Sox' veteran staff and they're paying off in brilliant style for manager Al Lopez. They've accounted for four of the White Sox' last six vic tories and Sunday they pro duced the American league champions' first rioublehead er sweep of the season with a pair of 2-0 victories over the Kansas City Athletics. The sweep was a much needed shot In the arm for the White Sox, who now have won three straight games for the first time in two weeks, and enabled them to move to within three games of the Ori oles, who beat the Washing ton Senators, 6-5, in a single game. The second-place Cleveland Indians topped the Detroit Ti gers, 9-0, after a 7-2 setback, and the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox, 5-4 and 8-3, in other American league games. Pirates' Lead Shrinks The Pittsburgh Pirates lost a half game of their National League lead when they were racked up, 2-0 and 4-1, by the Philadelphia Phillies and the St, Louis Cardinals whip ped the San Francisco Giants, 9-4. The Milwaukee Braves defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 4-1, after a 3-2 loss, and the Chicago Cubs outslugged the Los Angeles Dodgers, 12-8. Center - fielder Lennie Green's wild throw after field ing a single by Marv Breeding enabled the Orioles to score two unearned runs in the ninth and snap a two-game losing streak. Jim Gentile and Brooks Robinson had three hits each for the Orioles while Billy Gardner and Jose Valdivielso homered for the Senators, who played the game under protest after pitcher Pedro Ramos was ejected for arguing with urn- niro Rill IVIpIC intpv in the fourth inning. EI Bobby Locke, just recalled from Indianr.polis, pitched a six-hitter and Jimmy Piersall and Hank Foiles homered to earn the Indians a split after Rocky Colavtto drove in three runs with a homer, double and single to pace a 12-hit De troit attack. Hector Lopez went 6-for-8 SF Giants Need Day To Recover San Francisco -WPD- The shell-shocked Giants get today off-and it's just as well. They need a day to recover from the 9-4 shellacking the St. Louis Cardinals gave them before 30.528 fans in Candle stick Park Sunday. In one of the craziest games of the season, the Cards pounded five Giant hurlers, including starter Sam Jones, for 17 hits-15 of them singles. Briggs, 48, collapsed at Williamstown, Mass., where he had gone to attend the graduation of his son, James, from Williams College Sunday. Bobby Shantz' bril liant relief pitching saved the first game for Ralph Terry and Art Ditmar's six-hitter won the nightcap. Gene Conley scattered 10 hits and Jim Owens pitched a seven-hitter for the Phillies who ended a six-game Pirate winning streak. Dick Stuart homered in the eighth inning of the second game to end a string of 22 consecutive in nings in which the Pirates failed to score. Bill White had two doubles and two singles and Ken Boy er and Carl Sawatski three hits each to lead the Cardi nals' 17-hit attack on Sam Jones and four successors. Home runs by Billy Martin, Roy McMillan and Vada Pin son enabled Cincinnati's Bob Purkey to win his fourth game but the Braves earned a split on the strength of War ren Spahn's one-hit relief pitching for 4 23 innings. Two-run singles by Earl Averill and Richie Ashburn were the big blows of a seven run sixth inning during which the Cubs sent 13 batters to the plate and took a 7-3 lead. This raised his total to 1,200. Decathlon Here Won By Cooper Terry Cooper, St. Mary's high, was winner of a decath lon meet run off Thursday and Friday at Medford High school. Cooper took first place in five of the 10 track and field events and totaled 5,040 points. Mike Hood. Medford High was second with 4,;i70. Other scorers, also from the public prep, were Bill Charley 4,010, Terry Ryan 3.780, Phil Humphreys 3,710 and Bob Rix 3,530. Cooper was first in the javelin with 174 feet, in the discus with 115 feet 6 inches, in the pole vault with 10-4, in the shot put with 45-9 and in the high jump with 6 feet. Hood took first in the 70 yard high hurdles with :08.9. in the 220-yard dash with :23.1 and in the broad jump with 21-2. Humphreys won the 100 at :10.3 and Rix the 660 at 1:27.2. In the hurdles Cooper was second in :09. He was second in the 100, tied for third in the 660, fourth in the 220 and fourth in the broad jump. They were scored by per formances in time, heights and distance according to a na tional standard.
