Science Has Found Out Startling Things About Hair Sprouting from the epider mis of warm blooded animals are peculiar elongated ob jects called "hairs"; the ma terial with which Nature clothes her subjects. The next closest thing to a hair is a feather; nature uses these on birds. Hair on the head of the human, serves two basic, useful purposes; personal adornment and pro tection from temperature changes. The whale and the por poise also have hair but it is hit-or-miss, and never thick enough to be of any impor tance. These creatures depend on fat layers for warmth. Fur bearing animals have hair so plentifully covering their bodies it becomes fur. Startling Discoveries When science began the serious study of the body of a living animal, they found out some startling things about hair. Some of these things were in the "believe-it-or-not" variety. They found that there is no fundamental difference in the hooves of a horse, the horn on the snout of the rhinoceros, the claws of the tiger or house-cat, and the finger or toe-nails of a human being except the shape. They are all made from hair; hair mixed with body glue and of course a few oth er ingredients created inside the bodies of animals. Reducing it down to me chanical terms, there are tiny gadgets called glands in the fingers and toes that mix the ingredients together in just the right proportions, and so lidify the resultant mixture into nails. Larger glands in the lower part of the horse's legs do the same thing, but come up with hooves. And a hoof on a horse is nothing more or less than a big fin gcrnail on the leg there was ever such a thing as a perfect "mix-master" then these glands are the original, and really fool-proof progenitors of such machines. Cows and sheep have "head sets" called horns. These are merely tresses of hair held together by some other va riety of "body-glue". Those glands are somewhat differ ent from those in the legs. Some sets make horns, others make hooves. The deer family "horns in" on another angle and compli cates the already confused gland idea a little by coming up with something different.) The horns of the deer are not held together with glue, but real, honest to goodness bone. They are attached to the ani mal's skeleton and each year they are shed. Constant Growth The horns and hooves of cattle and sheep, the finger nails of man, the claws of dogs and bears grow constant ly and must be trimmed or worn down by constant use. Fingernails, claws and hooves are not connected in any way to the skeleton of the owner. All these tresses or nails or hair are useful. The finger nails serve many purposes. In primitive man they were handy in ripping the husks from food or the skin from animals. They served then, as they do now, as tweezers, forceps, screw-drivers, probes, scoops and small cutting tools. Modern man also finds many small uses. His toe nails, however, are just going along for the ride. The bare foot boy of course finds them handy to run slivers under, or he can watch them turn a deep blue-black when his toe is stubbed on a rock. The boy too, finds a limited use for toe nails. He can use the LEGAL NOTICES RFSOM'TION NO. 1077 !
