Convicted Burglar Gets Extra Term Salem - 0JP1) - Thirty more months in prison were meted here Friday to an inmate who threatened to sock his own at torney in the nose in court while the attorney was de fending him on his escape charge. Circuit court levied the sen tence on John Grady Pippcn, He was serving two years for burglary from Douglas coun ty when he escaped from the prison annex lmt Feb. 29. During an April 18 hearing on the escape charge, Pippen got into an argument with his defense attorny and threaten ed to punch the lawyer. Drifting Bmtor Pintail f GeJte Sk Salem - (UPD - Bill Stout of Salem spent Friday night drifting down the Willamette river from Stjlem to Newberg in 0 borrowed boat that ran out of gas. The 14-foot outboard conk ed out just before dusk, and Stout found that all he could do was let it drift. The owner of the boat, Wayne Tracksel, became con cerned about 2 a.m. and alert ed police. ' They Kave him some gas. Senator Durno Flies To State Meetings Slate Sen. Edwin R. Durno recently flew to Eugene where he Joined a party of news papermen bound for the Ore gon coast to tour the Sand Dunes area in the Florence Reedsport region. The area is currently being considered for national park status. Thursday evening, he flew to Klamath Falls to attend a timber tax meeting this week end. The meeting is to include a tour of the local mills there. Airline Vants to Wat?e Idaho Stop Baker - (UPD - West Coast Airlines recommended Friday that its stop at Burley-Rupert, Ida., be continued. O This was the main action to come out of a three-day Civil Aeronautics Board hearing on recertifying West Coast stops in five Eastern Oregc and Idaho cities. Herman Schucrer, vice president of West Coast, asked that the Idaho landing be re certified on the basis of a more than 200 per cent In crease in boardings in the first five months of 1960 over the same period in 1939. The airline took a neutral stand on recertification for La Grande presently on the schedule, Baker and Ontario, Ore., and McCall, Ida. Decisions on all five stops will be made by the CAB, meeting In Washington, D.C. Police Acad1 Bend-IMPD-The Oregon State Sheriff's association, meeting in Bend Friday adopted a resolution favoring establish ment of a police academy in Oregon. The resolution followed a speech by State Sen. Carl Francis (R-Dayton) advocating the academ; Francis, a Republican candi date for attorney general in November, introduced a reso lution in the legislature two years ago calling for an in terim committee to study the academy idea oand report to the next session. The resolu tion died In committee. Salem Inmates to Testify at Trial Salem - (UPD - The Oregon state penitentiary is going to temporarily release two of its inmates, one a former acting police chief, go they may testi fy in a case In Colorado in volving an alleged crime ring. The inmates are Howard Clifford Moore, 41, and Oliver Lusk, 26. During the trial they win be lodged in Colo rado praon. Moore for a brief time was acting police chief of Browns ville, Ore. He is also a former deputy sheriff in Colorado, Moore was arrested in Octo ber, 1959 in Albany, Ore., and some $10,000 in stolen prop erty was re-covered in his home. Lusk was arrested as an accomplice in a burglary ring. Colorado officials say the two are key witnesses against alleged members of the same ring now charged with var ious crimes and held in Colorado, Lumber Mart's! Continues Sloe Portland-flJPB-A continued slow, competitive lumber and plywood market in the week ending Friday was reported by Crow's Lumber Market News Service Saturday. Trading appeared to be more active in a few sections of the country, according to the report, but on a national basis, the volume of orders was still below production. Most of the slowdown was accredited to a lower rale of housing starts. Contract Awarded For Staff Houses Salem-IUPD-C. M. Corkum Company, Inc., Portland Fri day was awarded an $81,739 contract by the board of con trol to build three staff houses at Dammasch State hospital. Corkum was the lowest of seven bidders. The board accepted work ing drawing for the capitol mall steam heat distribution system renovation and exten sion project Grange News Roxy Ann The Roxy Ann Grange will meet this evening. Hatfield to Call Delegates Meeting Salem - (UPD - Gov. Mark Hatfield said Saturday he in tends to call an organizational meeting of Oregon's delega tion to the Republican Nation al convention but said this probably won't be for at least another week. Primary election returns are coming in very slowly and election of Oregon's 18-mem-ber delegation has not been cleared up yet. Hatfield is certain to be one of the delegates.
