The average cost per pupil In the Medford district this year is $429, based on the average dally membership. This is an increase of $32.50 per child over the per pupil cost of $306.50 during the school year 1958-59, the study showed. Compared Favorably Although comparative fig ures from other Oregon school districts for the present year were not available, per pupil costs in Medford compared favorably with other districts last year. Lowest per pupil cost, according to the study, was $311.92 in Ashland, and the highest was. $513.20 in Klamath County high during the year 1958-59. In the 10 years preceding the 1958-59 year, Medfordjs cost per pupil rose $180.95, figure not out of line tvith other districts cooperating in the study.. In McMinnvilIe, for exam ple, per pupil costs rose $38.90 in 10 years to the 1918-M cost of $372.84, and in Koseburg, the cost rose 928 in 10 years to 1958-59's cost of $380.97 per pupil. LkwI Share of Cost Instruction takes the larg est share of the per pupil cosj in all districts reporting in the 1951-51 survey by the AAUW. The trend did not change during, the present year with SI.5 per cent going for instruction in the Med ford district. Other functions of the dis trict take betvecn .00 and 7.9 per cent of the fur pupil tost. They include operation, 7.9 per cent; maintenance end repairs, 5.1 per cent; fixed charts, 5 4 par cent; capital outlay, 5.2 per cent; auxiliary, 4.4 per cent; administration, 1.2 pr cent; emergency, .4 per cent; and debt service, 005 ptr cit. The increase In per pupil cost In the Medford district as is probably true in most other districts in the state, is because of inflation, increased enrollments and teacher sal ary increases. In addition to those three major factors, there are other fnctors whfch have contribut ed to the increa to a lesso? degree. , OtfhMM VmImm V ' Thfy ace,-mi the degree te trail tcy have affected the increase: new programs (gifted child, mentally retard ed, handicapped children), vary littke; expnnsian of exlst- avoArame, vary liltla: cha08 ia elm size, now larjair; improvement ia quel- ty s temmi's (aagrcul train A, batlir traiaud teacher, WMWMKPa), aoans; incraaa in Pupils Cost Rise contributions to retirement Programs. minnr inrrnQL-nH expenditures for instructional materials and supplies, minor; other factors, very little. Revenue in kip M,.HfrH district is derived from four main sources, according to in formation furnished by the AAUW hV Dr l.,,n:.rH R Mayfield, superintendent, and oiner administrative person nel. Federal aid totals about 1.5 per cent of the district's rev. enuc, stale aid totals about 30.1 per cent, county school fund about 6.1 per cent (based on $10 fer census child), and the local district levy totals aboi 81.7 total revenue. An additional .8 per cent comes from mis cellaneous sources. Information cnmnilpH in the AAUW study will be pre pared in booklet form, local AAUW renrPKPnf ativps !iiH and copies will be presented to legislators. One of the reasons for the Studv Of Sphnnl finanpps anrl the cost per pupil was to help me AAUW determine what stand it will lake contenting federal aid, local organization officials said.
