Bill Corbln, class vice president, acted as master-of-ceremonies. Eighth grade "native girls" presented members of the court with wrist corsages. Music was provided by Lynn Offord and his music men from the high school. General chairman for the dance was Class President Gibb Mitchell with Janet O'Sullivan, refreshments; Mike Railton, entertainment; nnd Sandra Gannon, refresh ments. J; ..-r TELLS OF ADVANCES-Dr. Tom Dooley, founder of the international medical organization known as "Medico," back in the united status tor a short fund-raising campaign, told a press conference in Los Angeles the many advances made by the program internationally. Known as the "jungle doc tor," Dooley has brought medical aid to mi&e than a mil lion people in many remote Asiatic countries since the work started in 1956. A student must receive a passing grade on this test in order to be eligible to take a foreign language. The faculty tennis team trounced the ninth graders 6 to 1 last week. They will meet the eighth graders Friday af ter school. Open house will be held at Hedrick Tuesday evening, May 31. The PTA will sponsor a food sale during open house. The evening's program will feature the orchestra, several numbers by the chorus, a brass septet from the band, displays of shop projects, sci ence projects, arts and craft, maps and projects from the geography department and history department. The home cconomWs classes will present their spring style show, mod eling! garments they have made this semester. Hedrick girls were hostesses to the McLoughlin girls at their annual play days Mon day (ninth grade), Tuesday (eighth grade), and Wednes day (seventh grade). They met in the gym to eat sack lunches and watch entertainment pro vided by both groups. After lunch games were held. The ninth grade had 20 teams which were named af ter shades of lipstick. The Pink TNT took first place with Queen of Diamonds, sec ond, and Rosy Futere's, third. The eighth grade had 24 teams named after cartoon strips. First place, Sluggo's; second, Charlie Brown's; and third, Bugs Bunnies. Seventh grade had HO teams named after automobiles. The Larks took first; Metropoli tans, second; and Rolls Royces, third. 0Fifth and sixth period phys ical education classes acted as referees. The eighth grude assembly was held Friday, May 27, with Chester Smith acting as master-of-ceremonies. Most of the acts revolved around types of dance. Acts presented were a square dancing group; Venlfl Burch and Allan Il.igle skat ing to "Let Me Call You Sweetheart;" a spectacular J group called the Rochcllcs performing the Can Can; Lin da Wilkes, a tap dance; Vir ginia Stuhhs, a record panto mime; the girls ensemble sing ing "Moonglow;" Pas Trow bridge, a record pantomime: Buff Pratt, a calypso number; and a beatnik scene with a dance to the theme of Poler Gunn. oaii girls' physical education classes took Oregon Motor Fitness tests last week. AETNA MAN DIES Hartford, Conn. - OTP - Mor gan B. Brainard Jr., 84, senior vice president, treasurer and director of the Aetna Life Affiliated Companies, died to day,' rroblcms facing the log and a request for suggestions for the legislative interim highway committee were discussed at a meeting of the truck committee of the Southern Oregon Conserva tion and Tree Farm associa tion recently in Medford. Among the suggestions presented for further study was a plan to review the overload fine schedule for log trucks, revision of the pres ent load limitations and length of loads for log trucks. The overload fine schedule was considered out of propor tion to the financial return of the complete load, accord ing to Steve Wilson, Wilson Trucking company, chairman of the committee. He added that the overload fines are oiR of line with penalties for other law violations. Fines run as high as $500 for a single violations for which the driver receives only $50 for the complete haul, he said. . He added that even the most drastic Traffic violation fine does not approach the fine schedule for overloads. Safety Devices In commenting on suggest ed changes for load, length, and weight, the truckers noted that the improvement equipment and safely de vices and the more modern highways were factors to rec ommend an increase in load limits. The extra length re quested would allow loggers nnd truckers to haul longer logs and not have to stock them so high on the bunks. The psychological impact on the uninitiated of a high load of logs is considerable, it was brought out, and the longer, lower load would be safer and still allow the log ger to cut a log of good utili zation "length and the trucker to -haul an economical lccid The length suggested for the average log was 44 feet or a 65-foot overall length of load and truck, similar to Califor nia regulaions The truck committee also discussed the possibility of requesting that the duties of weighmaslers be handled by the stale police and that the trained men assigned these duties also be available for other police duties. The truckers and other lumber industry representa tives at the meeting were agreed that the prime need is more uniformity of laws in the general areas of discussion instead of the present situa tion of different regulations between Oregon tod the neighboring states of Califor nia and Washington. Tourist Impression Inasmuch as the tourist Im pression of the lumber indus try, Oregon's largest industry is gained by the contact he has with the log trucks on the highway, the members suggested that other commun ity groups have a stake in seeing thai the logger can op erate economically and effi ciently, iney would then op erate in a manner that would best reflect pride in the lum ber industry.
