William Ful bright (D-Ark.) of the Senate i r i .. ! 1'ureiKii Relations committee noted the danger of anti- American demonstrations in Japan. Mansfield told newsmen he was "yetting a little worried" about the Japanese phase of the trip because the riotfbin that country "seem to be in creasing in number and evi dently in strength." Fu .bright said the Presi dent should not go to Japan if ''conditions are bad and ho won't get a proper reception." But he said he thought Eisen hower's good will trips geni ally have done some good. iiy Council Sylvia P. - I've grrt to get out of my rul. Mrs. J.P.-A single girl be longs with her parents. Sylvia P. - I am 28 and single. That's my problem. I'd like very mg(.'h to marry before I'm 29-that's my dead line. The way things look now I don't stand a chance. I date, but there's nobody I am ser iously interested in. I.Iost of the men I know are either dyed-in-the-wool bachelors or the kind who make me feel like 'being a spinster. I feel that I've got to get out of my rut. I've got to meet new people in new sur roundings. I learned. recently nhnut an overseas job for the Slate Department and I want to go - anywhere! But my parents want to keep me home. They say they'd be too lonesome without mo. Be sides, they don't approve of girls being on their own. How old-fashioned can you got? Mrs. J. P. - I feel that a girl belongs wilh her parents until she gets married. 1 know that's considered old-fashion ed these days, but I also know that modern ways aren't al ways belter than the old ones. It's true we'd be lonesome without Sylvia, as she is our only unmarried child, but we would be willing to do what ever is best for her. We can't believe it's good for a single girl to be alone, thousands of miles from her family, with nobody to turn to in case of trouble. My husband and I also feel there are plenty of nice Amer ican men right around here to choose trnni. We don't like Sylvia's going out with for eigners. Sylvia should take a second look at the fellows she knows. The Council: We agree that modern ways aren't always better than the old-fashioned ones, but we think it is im portant to remember that some of the better, olri-f;(fth-loned customs are not quite practical in the modern world. In the days when it was un thinkable for a girl to leave Jier parents' roof' until she was married, the parents took the major share of the respon sibility of finding a husband for hoc. Perhaps this wasn't a bad idea, but it is totally un acceptable to the vast iviajor i'v of young Americans to !'. t; iris must seek their own husbands and sometimes they have to venture a bit on their quest. While we do not think it is necessary to go globe-trotting in sila'Th of a husband, the excitement of travel and the rw'cr.vsity for finding n e w irknds sometimes stimulates a girl to change her outlook and this helps her lind that hi.. 'band. Many girls him" taken overseas jobs and then conic home and married the boy next door. Wider exper ience gave them a fu'ler un derstanding of their nwn values and the qualities they really desired in a lifetime companion. O tJJ she has average common sense and maturity for her age, Sylvia is unlikely to run into serious trouble. If she does, however, we can't think of better protection than the U.S. Stale Department. We doubt whether she'll be at the mercy of dangerous foreign' ers. Probably her closest friends of both sexes will be Americans.
