Paret won the decision to take the crown from Jordan. (UPI Telephoto) Paret Wrests Welterweight Toga From Don Jordan By JACK CUDDY Las Vegas, Nev. - (UPD -Muscular Benny (Kid) Paret of Cuba, whose wilting body attack won the world welter weight championship from lanky Don Jordan Friday night, probably will defend his new 147-pound crown in New York on Oct. 15. Despite a private return bout contract with Jordan of Los Angeles, negotiations to day indicated that the Madi son Square Garden challenger would be Federico Thompson of Argentina - not Jordan. Jordan, 25, was unimpres sive in Friday night's nation ally televised 15-rounder at the Las Vegas Convention center as he lost a unanimous decision before a disappoint ing crowd estimated at 3,500 Paret weighed 146Va and Jordan 144V4. Third Straight Defeat Don, who weakened under Paret s persistent body bar rages, suffered his third straight defeat. The scoring on a five-point-must basis fav ored Paret as follows: Referee Charley Randolph, 71-65; judge Ray Lessard, 70 68, and judge Ralph Mosa, 71-67. The United Press In ternational agreed 72-65. Dur ing the comparatively dull fight, Jordan suffered a five stitch cut on his left brow and a nick on his right brow. He was bleeding from the nose at the finish, and his left cheekbone was swollen. There are several reasons why Jordan will be bypassed as the opponent for Cuba's second world welterweight champion in October. First, and perhaps most im portant, Paret and manager Phoenix Among Leaders in A-2 Manuel Alfrao would prefer a challenger who could com mand a large fee from tele vision and draw a capacity crowd in New York. Thompson Probably Naxt Slugger Thompson - who knocked out Jordan in the fourth round at Buenos Aires on Dec. 12 and held Paret to a 12-round draw at Madi son Square Garden on March 25-appears to be the money opponent. Second, Anthony Maceroni of Providence, R.I.-president of the National Boxing Asso ciation - announced at the ringside Friday night that the NBA would insist that Paret make his first defense against Thompson, and that the Paret- Thompson winner defend against Luis Rodriguez of Cuba, current top contender.
