FIVE FUN VACATIONS ON A BUDGET These out-of-the-ordinary trips are tailor-made for people with more imagination than money v- Sanibel Island off Florida coast offers tropical paradise at moderate cost. Tired of doinc the same old thing for your vacation, summer after sum mer? Tired of bucking heavy traffic, of finding "No Vacancy" signs in the well traveled resort areas which just about everybody seems to go to? And do you wind up spending more than you had planned on a lackluster, routine va cation that leaves you bored, restless, fatigued, and anxious to get home? Then perhaps you should try some thing new this summer, a different sort of vacation, one that gives you freedom from work and care and, most impor tant, the change a real vacation should provide. What we have in mind are un usual vacations you can enjoy perhaps not far from where you live at virtu ally stay-at-home prices. Here are five of them to choose from. 1. Close-to-Home Cruises If it's a cruise you've set your heart on, you can have your shipboard vaca tion without leaving North America. Thanks to the many rivers, inland seas, canals, bays, and other waterways that lace our land, you can, for example, spend a week cruising the Great Lakes. This pleasure cruise puts in at such scenic and historic spots as Mackinac Island, known as the Bermuda of the North (the only modes of transporta tion allowed here are bicycles and 'horse-drawn carriages), and also stops at Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Duluth to permit sight-seeing and to pick up passengers. (You can start your cruise at any of these points.) Aboard the floating hotel, you can indulge in much the same activities customary on ocean cruises: shuffle board, deck tennis, lounging, dancing, and movies. Rates start at $166.50, and there are special fares for children. To recapture the charm of the old river days, you can cruise down the Mississippi or its tributaries on a big, modernized paddle-wheel steamer. The cruises, which run from 4 to 20 days, originate in Cincinnati, but you may be able to arrange to board at any one of its stopping points. Rates for the shorter cruises are as low as $63. If you must have a cruise with a for eign flavor, you can take one of the many steamers that frequently leave Montreal and Toronto during the sum mer and cruise French Canada by way of the St. Lawrence and Saguenay Riv- Bird watchers flock to Audubon Camp. Typical all-expense cruises, including sight seeing, start at about $150 for six days; shorter cruises are also available for as low as $75. In the province of Manitoba, you can take a week-long cruise on 300-mile-long Lake Winnipeg for only $75 (half fare for children under 12). The destination is Norway House, at the northern tip of the lake, one of the oldest trading posts of historic Hudson's Bay Company. 2. Island Hideaways Islands like Nantucket off the East Coast and Catalina off the West are, of course, known to everyone. But who hasn't dreamed of getting away from it all and vacationing on some secluded, little-known island well off the usual tourist route? Probably not more than a two- or three-day drive from where you live is some such island, accessible by bridge, ferry, or boat.
