oo o c Whittaker Twins Airlifted From Alaska Mountain Anchorage. Alaska (VPI) .lames and Lewis Whittaker. 31, Seattle twins, were rushed to the 5040th Hospital at El mendorf Air Force Base here Monday night after being air lifted from the 10.000-foot level of Mt. McKinley. The Whittakers were strand ed near the 18. 000-fnot level last Tuesday when they fell with two other men while mountain climbing. The Air Force disclosed early this morning that it had erroneously reported four other men were also removed from the peak. They said that Dr. Rodman Wilson,, Paul Crews. Chuck Metzger and Andy Brauchli, all of Anchor age, were taken from the 10.000-foot camp but later re vised their statement. Monday night's rescue l came when the weather cleared enough to allow an Air Force SH21 helicopter i enough time to reach the ' 10.000-foot base camp and j ' safely return with the Whittakers. Still on the mountain are about 20 climbers who were aiding in the rescue efforts. It is believed they will climb down from the base camp when the weather breaks or will be airlifted out. Bill Stevenson, 33, Spenard. Alaska, and T. Spt. Robert T. Elliott, Elmen dorf Air Force Base, were killed last week when their Cessna 180 crashed while making a supply drop to the stranded climbers at the 18,-000-foot level. Also last week. Link Luckett, a daring helicopter pilot from Anchorage, had picked up Pete Schoening, 31, Seattle, and John Day, SI, Central Point, Ore. Both men today were in the hospital along with the Whittakers. Another climber, Mrs. Helga Bading, 31, Anchorage, was rescued Friday after col lapsing high on the mountain Tuesday from a lack of oxygen and overexertion. She was plucked from the 14.500-foot level by Don Shel don, a Talkeetna bush pilot. Nuclear Weapons For Battlefields Washington -H'Pri - Weapons designers are working on nu clear warheads for battlefield use which would do most of their killing with radiation instead of blast. Such weapons, according to their proponents, would be deadly to enemy soldiers but wouldn't do much widespread damage to machines, build ings, and other physical assets which a victor might want to preserve. Actually, these weapons would be A-bombs or possibly H-bombs so small that their "fast kill" radiation range, measured in hundreds of feet, would exceed their lethal blast range. It has been reported that scientists of the Atomic 1 I ergy Commission's Livcrmorc, Calif., weapons laboratory are pushing two projects to de velop such small battlefield weapons. Thev cannot be brought to completion, it is said, without resumption of underground weapons testing. This country has not, however, scheduled any new weapons tests. Salem - HTC - State Rep. Rudy Lachenmeier Funeral Thursday Portland -It'PIi- Funeral serv ices will bp held Thursday for Rudy Lachenmeier. 39. outdonrsman and sportscaster, who died Monday after a long illness. Lachenmeier is survived by his widow and three children. He had an outdoor show on KGW-TV at the time of his death. He began radio work here in 1942 for KXL. Ts Face Norblad Owens, a partner in a St Helens furniture store, will faee Republican Rep. Waller Norblad. who has represented the district for 14 years. No Democrat has even been elect ed there. "My campaign will be to restore the two-parly system to the district." Owens said. "I believe I can get the neces sary Republican votes and T suggest Walt Norblad start running against Marv Owens instead of against Jimmy Hoffa." The soldier said Norblad has been seeking political cap- ; ltal by claiming he is on a "purge list" put out by Team ster President Hoffa. "Oregon has slipped out of Republican hands to the Dem ocrats." Owens said. "And I think I'll bring the first dis trict over." Attended College lie said he was "overwhelm ed with gratitude" for the faith that voters showed in him by nominating him de spite his youth and the fact that he has never held any political office. After leaving an "unsuccess ful" education at Seattle City College in the senior year, Owens said, he entered the furniture business in his home town at the age of 22 and began taking an active part in Young Democrat activities. "I became president of the Columbia County Young Dem ocrats. This put me on the state executive council and from there I became active with the Democratic Central Committee of the county," Owens said. Greatly Encouraged He said he decided to file for the congressional nomina tion when he found out that Attorney General Robert Thornton, who had run in 1S58, would not be a candi date this year. "I went out and checked grass roots feel ing, and I was greatly en couraged." Owens, drafted in 1958, ex pects to gel out of the service in August. He is a jeep driver at this Army camp on the California coast. Owens, a strapping B foot 2 inches and 1!)0 pounds, said if he is elected in November he will be the youngest con gressman in office. He and his wife, Janice, have no children. Portland - The big job of helping nature keep Oregon's forest green and growing through tree planting and aerial seeding got a record breaking boost from Oregon's industrial tree farmers this year. Preliminary estimated plac ed the number of trees plant ed on industrial Tree Farm lands at upwards of 7,000,011(1 seedlings on well over 13,000 acres. More than 20.000 acres were aerially seeded. Many companies set new high records for planting and seeding on their lands. Though forests will repro duce themselves naturally un der most conditions, planting and seeding is often used to speed up generation of new forest cover or to rehabilitate lands where fire has destroy ed seed sources. Forest industry reforesta tion work in Oregon is part of an intensive effort by the nation's private timberland owners to accelerate natural forest regeneration in order to get maximum production of timber crops on commercial forest land. Nationally, industrial tim berland owners covered an es timated 450.000 acres with new young trees during ine 1 95f) (i0 planting season, ac- j cording to an America Forest Products Industries survey. This figure represents an all-time high for forest indus try reforestation and a jump of approximately 10 per cent over the previous season. The nation's tree-planting rate has doubled in the last three years, and tripled in the past six years. Many of the companies ob tained their trees from the in dustry's Col. W. B. Greeley Forest Tree nursery at Ni- squally, Wash., operated by Industrial Forestry associa tion, Portland. The nursery shipped more than A, 200.000 seedlings to Oregon and Washington timberland own ers during the 1959 B0 season. Other stock came from stale and private tree nurseries. The shift was made because the forestry department has men in the field tn better ad minister the land, the Land Board said. One parcel of (133 acres is in Coos county and 551 acres in a separate transfer also are in that county. The second separate trans fer included a total of 2.387 acres. 875 of them in Clatsop county.
