During 1959 a total of 153,614 monkeys were exported, most of them to the United States and Great Britain. The small rhesus monkeys are used for medical research, in the production of vaccines and in space tests. Here "Miss Sam," a two-year-old rhesus monkey ,is fitted with a space suit before being rocketed into space aboard a Mercury satellite at Wallops Island, Va., in January, 1960. (UPI Telephoto) Exporting Rhesus Monkeys From India Big Business Item Fleet To Combat Russ Missile Subs Washington. -fljPlt-The Navy has been reported to be seri ously considering construction of a fleet of swift new des troyers to combat the threat of Soviet missile submarines. Missiles and Rockets maga zine said the destroyers would carry antimissile missiles that could knock down an enemy missile as it broke from the surface of the sea. The swift ships also would have tile capability of dashing close to an enemy shore and launching missiles of several hundred miles range against land targets. The magazine said the main argument for proceeding as rapidly as possible with the development of a hydrofoil destroyer is the expected fu ture threat from Russian nuclear-powered subs. The Russians are expected to begin deploying missile launching submarines off U.S. coasts by about 1969. The magazine said they would be able to outrace any conven tional warship now afloat. The hydrofoil craft would be able to speed over the sea at between 60 to 100 knots - nearly two or three times fast-; er than any present U.S. sur face ship. . New Delhi (UPK If this sounds like a lot of monkey business, it is! During 1959, a total of 155, 614 monkeys were exported from India, most of them to the United States and Britain. Sales amounted to SI. 200, 000. The monkeys - small rhesus varieties weighing four to six pounds - are used for medical research and in the produc tion of polio and yellow fever serums. Center ef Storm Although monkey exports seldom raise Indian eyebrows these days, in 1955 the simi ans were the center of a na tionwide storm. The trouble started when indignant Hin dus claimed a number of In dian monkeys died in London as the result of inhumane treatment. Orthodox Hindus regard monkeys in much the same manner as they do sacred cows. No Hindu dares hurt the monkeys and Moslems wisely leave them alone. The London incident creat ed a furor in India. Orthodox Hindus demanded that mon key exports be banned. The matter was debated in parlia ment and Prime Minister Neh ru ordered an investigation American and British re search organizations were able to convince the Indian govern ment that exports should con tinue. Diplomats personally assured Nehru the monkeys would be treated well and that the Indian religious senti ments would be respected. The result was that monkey exports continued but a num ber of restrictions were im posed. They included the pro vision that the monkeys were to be used only for medical research and in making serums. The government also moved in on the monkey trapper. Trappers were told to obtain licenses and were ordered to bag their monkeys in a hu mane way. Although the captured simi an is doomed in the interest of science, he leads a good life until the end. One monkey exporter, H. S. Ray, of the Vita Company Ltd., keeps his monkeys happy and relaxed with music from a cage-side radio. Must Be Flown Under law, the monkey must be flown to his final destination. Proper feeding is required at the airport. At his destination the monkey is met by an Indian representa tive who must be satisfied Invitations Sent ., For Cancer Event Invitations are being sent this week to all doctors in southern Oregon and northern California to attend the first ! Clewiston, Fla.-(UPD-Six per sons, including three children, died Saturday night when their car plunged into a canal. that all requirements have been met during the journey. Lest there be any doubt of the Indian's concern for his monkeys, an official of the In dian embassy in Washington sought clarification on the ori gin of monkeys used in space research. The national health institute assured the diplomat Indian monkeys would not be space pioneers.
