Dwight James, Crater, will join Garrison in the state high jump. He tied for second but had less missis than two oth- diadem for its third successive : ers. Crater also qualified Max season. Earlier in the season the Medford Black Tornado had loomed as a reviving cinder power in southern Oregon. But the Cavemen of GP nip ped the Tornado in a dual a week ago, then yesterday pulled away in the final tabu lations to retire the district trophy. They showed more depth of talent than rival ag gregations. Grants Pass totaled 164' a points to Medford's second place 129' 2. Crater was third with 58. Then came Klamath Falls with 44 i and Ashland with 35'. markers. Old Record Falls Steve Gray, Ashland, smash ed the oldest record in the district books by oroad jump ing a mighty 22 feet 8 in ches. This was of an inch better than the 22-84 leaped by Dollarhide of Lakeview 20 years ago in 1940. Larry Holmes, Grants Pass pole vaulter, and Ron Hoat son, GP discus heaver, estab lished the other new stand ards. Holmes vaulted 12-11 , more than making up for last year when he was favored and failed to win. Hoatson spun the platter a hefty 162 Bli. Bob Voris, Ashland, ran the high hurdles in a record equaling :14.6. The Cavemen added three seconds to their firsts to qual ify for 10 berths in the state meet next Friday and Satur day at Corvallis. Medford picked up nine places in state, Crater four. Ashland three and Klamath Falls two. Meek Takes Century Ray Meek took the 100-yard dash for the Cavemen and Al Staley the 440-yard run. Ron Doyle copped low hurdle honors for GP, Ke;. Marshall took the 880 and the crew of Staley, Harvey Graham, Den nis Patterson and Meek claim ed the relay honors. Seconds by Tom Hathaway in the broad jump and by Bill Chronister In the 880 gained slate meet spots for the Cave men. Ron Mclntire, CP, tied with teammate Gary Ricks in the pole vault and will go to state on the basis of less miss es. Ray Smith won the mile for M t d f o r d and Leonard Griggs the 220 dash. Crater firsts were by Derrell Wil liamson in the shot put and Don Garrison in the high Jump. Klamath's Individual win ner was Allen Phillips in the Javelin. Medford gained seven sec ond spots for state meet en try. These were Mike Hood in the high and low hurdles, Tom Bortis in the shot put. Griggs in the 100, Phil Humphreys in Burton in the juvelin. Hath away was 21-9?j for second points. Burton, who threw the javelin 211-9 last week heaved it 190-5 on his first effort yesterday and hurt his arm on the try. Grants Pass and Medford spoiled one prediction - that state meet spots would be well divided among competing schools. Medford had a 112'4 to 108' i edge over GP after a nip and tuck battle for first place through 11 events. Then the Cavemen took first, sec ond and fourth in the half mile to Medford's fifth and sixth: first to the Tornado's Wayne Cowan, M: Williamson.
