Traut man today underlined orga nized baseball's vehement op position to the Senate's pend ing baseball bill. Trautman was scheduled to appear before the Senate anti monopoly subcommitte which extended its baseball hearing to question him. His pre pared statement was made public Thursday. Baseball Commissioner Ford C. Frick expressed strong opposition Thursday to the bill on grounds that it would destroy the minor leagues and "degrade" the majors. However, Branch Rickey, president of the Con tinental league, urged its ap proval. The 78-year-old Rickey used his testimony to lay his ora torical lash on organized baseball. He led a Continen tal league delegation which accused the major league owners of blocking the forma tion of the new league with delaying tactics and what Rickey called "impossible" in demnities to existing leagues. Frick denied that he was throwing any roadblocks in the path of the new league. He said he hoped Rickey would succeed. He c o nv plained, however, that a new major league must not be based on the "wreckage" of the minors. The proposed baseball bill is part of an omnibus sports bill. It would give a limited exemption under the anti trust laws to certain baseball operations. But controversial provisions would limit to 100 the number of players any major league team could con trol and set standards to ease the path for new major leagues Portland -UP1)-The Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast baseball league announced Thursday they have purchased Milt Graff and righthanded pitcher Harry Byrd. The Beav ers purchased Graff, a regular second baseman for Portland last year, from Dallas - Fort Worth of the Texas league and bought Byrd from the Miami club of the Internation al league.
