IceMt U not the cold, the anger or the hardship that puts a strain on men stationed in Antarctic posts for a year, Capt. Charles Samuel Mullin oi the U.S. Navy Medical Corps stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadel phia, told the American Psy chiatric Association meeting re. Three thines contribute to the unusual stress experi enced, he said. The most im portant Is the difficulty of getting along in the "tight little society" In which he is placed. Dependent on Each Other Each man soon learns that he is entirely dependent upon me next man and on the group. This means that if he becomes angry, he will not show it. Fights are very rare, but headaches are extraordi narily common. The inner tensions due to swallowed anKcr also contrib- le to insomnia, or the "Bie Eye," which is common dur ing the round-the-clock dark ness of winter. The second stress is the sameness encountered by the men-the same few faces, the . same surroundings, the same relatively simple routine oi life and the long period of en forced physical inactivity. Appetites Enormous The third stress is the ab sence of family and loved " ones and of the familiar pleas- res of the man s "personal civilization." As might be ex pected, Capt. Mullin said, the men try to make up for the other deprivations by the en joyment of food. Appetite and consumption are enormous, he reported. Sex deprivation does not seem to be an important prob lem to the men except in rare instances during periods of personal emotional upset. Despite these difficulties, Capt. Mullin said that a group s morale is generally of a high order and so also Is the group s effecitveness in the discharge of its functions. In fact, the men who spend the winter in remote stations feel that something worth-, while has happened to their' personalities.
