The thoughts usually are pleasant unless you are one of those lawn-growers whose lawn won't grow, or you've Just moved into a new house where no lawn has been de veloped. For people in auch situa tions. J. T. Thurston, manager of research and development for American Cyanamid Com pany's agricultural division, has the latest information on developing a new lawn. He recommends this step-by-step procedure: 1. Carefully measure the area to be seeded to deter mine the square footage. You will find that this measure ment is necessary :n purchas ing the right amount of seed, fertilizer and other needed items. Check Supplier 2. You should check with your local farm and garden supplier to determine the best time of year for seeding. Lawn seedings in spring usual ly are not as successful as later except in the far West. However, your area may be an exception. Your local mer chant or agricultural experi ment station can tell you. Late summer and early fall are the best times for seeding in most areas. 3. During dry weather and In western irrigated regions, your first step is to thoroughly soak the soil to a depth of five to six inches so that it can be worked easily and will i be lump-free. 4. Following this, apply - regular fertilizer as locally recommended and till the soil, either mechanically or by hand, turning the old sod and weeds. 5. Rake and work soil until It is free of all lumps and the surface is smooth. If you plan to apply peat moss, you should do it at this stage so that it will be incorporated in the oil. 6. Purchase calcium cyana mide (generic name), a fer tilizer, which initially kills weed seeds in the soil before breaking down to a lime and nitrogen base. To help you have a weed free lawn next year, spread evenly five pounds of this material for each 100 square feet ol sou surface.
