It was the national conven- Unification Said Hard To Visualize Washington - HOT - German reunification on terms accept able to both East and West is hard to visualize, according to a study prepared for the Na tional Planning association. The study says a continuing division may be the best that can be .'hieved in the fore seeable future. But it warned that "as long as the division exists it must be expected to lead to periodic irritations and to periodic attempts by the Soviet Union to change it in its favor." The study was written by Dr. Wolfgang F. Stolper, pro fessor of economics . t the Uni versity of Michigan, entitled "Germany Between East West." it will he published soon by the National Planning association. A brief summary of the study was released here by the NPA. The National Planning as sociation is a nonprofit, non political organization d evoted to planning by Americans in agriculture, business, labor and the professions. FIHST GOP CONVENTION This is an artist's conception of a building called "the Wigwam" which was hastily constructed in 1860 to house the Republican national con vention. It was put up so fast that it had only three sides the back was simply a bor rowed wall from an adjoining building. All that remains of the "wigwam' 'today is a dusty, paint-covered plaque donated by the Daughters of the American Revolution. (UPI Telephoto) Ancient Eskimo Gets Toothache Anchorage, Alaska-IUPD-An Eskimo native from Lime Vil lage, Alaska, recently , hob bled 40 miles on crutches to an Air Force landing strip for a trip to get his teeth fixed. When he arrived at the hos pital in Anchorage, after a 100 mile flight, he told at . tendants, "I'm Stony Pappy I'm 113 years old and I got a toothache." - Hospital officials said the man was at least 97 but couldn't verify that he was 113. Kyto, MMage STORE HEAD DIES Nashville, Tenn. fUPIl Fred Harvey, 57, who built a small, run-down store into one of the best known department stores in the nation, Harvey's department store here, died Monday. Labor Shortage Eased by Wives Frankfurt, Germany- lUPtl -Communist East Germany is calling up "housewife labor brigades" in an effort to solve its chronic labor shortage. The Institute for German Industry, which collects in dustrial information about both East and West Germany, said Communist authorities were now organizing house wives into work brigades un der the banner of the Demo cratic Women's league. . The brigades are expected to do 15 to 20 hours work a week either in industry or agriculture, and to "renounce" payment for "patriotic rea sons." The institute said Commu nist authorities hope more than 25 million man hours will be worked by house wives in 1960. Only a week earlier offic ials had pleaded for donations of any old chairs for the gal lery. The convention opened on WcdiKauav, 11 o y 16. By noun, Friday, the Republicans had a presidential nominee-Abraham Lincoln. So little was known of Lin coln he was requested to write a campaign biography. Lincoln submitted some notes. Not Much There is not much of it," he explained, "for the reason. I guess, that there is not much of me." Site of the convention was The Wigwam, built for S6.000 but so hastily that one wall was left off. For its back. The Wigwam thus simply borrow ed the wall of an adjoining store. In 70 daySj the Republican Party again will convene in Chicago. There no longer, however, is a Wigwam. There is no longer the corner of Lake and Market sts., where The Wig wam stood. They call Market st. "North Wacker dr" now and a nine-story office build ing, its red brick caked with soot, long ago replaced the Wigwam. An iron plaque donated by the Daughters of the Ameri can Revolution marks the site. The plaque is between display windows of a cement com pany and a paper merchant. A few hundred yards north east is the Merchandise Mart. About eight miles southwest is The Ampitheatre, site of the July convention. Enthusiastic Then as now the conven tioneers were enthusiastic. But then arriving delegates were greeted with brass bands and cannon volleys. Hotels were packed 100 years ago too and by actual count 132 persons slept on billiard tables that first night. The convention only met long enough for the keynote address and other formal openings on Wednesday. At 2 a m., however, the Missouri delegation was said to have been still singing in its rooms Thursday, a battle develop ed over credentials. Support ers of William Seward, the pre-convention choice, were challenged for power by dele gates backing Lincoln and a half-dozen favorite sons. A third roll call Friday morning showed Lincoln only 2' 2 votes short of the nomina tion. It was at this point that a delegate from Ohio named Carter stuttered his way into history.
