I MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Or. I Monday. May 16, I960 A ' Try and Stop Mo By BENNETT CERF- AT A MEETING to discuss the role of the serious writer in America today, Miss Dorothy Parker put an end to a lot of pompous and elegant phraseology, as she has done so al'.:a ia the pail, Ly rising to her feet, survey- v ing the audience soberly, and remarking, "The business of a writer is to write: and not to put on sirs about being a writ er." Then she sat down and a lot of people present felt that a draught cf pure, fresh air had blown away a lot of pre tentious nonsense. CM In the Days News By FRANK JENKINS It is the same Dorothy Uoxottvu VsLxteX Tarker who recalls a day . J vrhen the late Harold Wal lace Koss, founder and editor of the yew Yorker, covered the margin of a Robert Benchley contribution with his usual caustic What mean?" and "Who he?" Benchley, unperturbed, simply crossed out the questions, wrote below them. "You keep out of this, Ross," and resubmitted the piece. It ran complete and un changed in tiie next issue. 1060; by Bennett Cert Distributixi by King Features Syndicate A Too Late To Classify FOR riE N f2-bdVm uiif urn". hmi. GiirHfie. From Chicago: Adlai E. Sievenson accused the aainimstrauon ot blunder ing on the eve of the summit conference and of SELFISH LY SEEKING NATIONAL SECURITY rather than world peace. He added: "Our government has blun dered and admitted it. And the blunder has made the Presi dent's task at the summit meeting more difficult." SEARCHING question: What kind of peace will we have if we lose National Security? The peace of the slave? Personally, I don't want that kind of peace. MU 9-1321, ORE from Washington - on a less explosive sub ject: Committee approval of a bill designed to help prevent and control juvenile delin quency was hailed yesterday by Representative Edith Green I of Oregon as a major step for- ward. The measure, approved , on Thursday by the house ed i ucation committee, would pro vide up to five million dollars I annually in federal grants for I research and the training of (professional) persons for work in curbing delinquency. Mrs. Green commented: "When we spend over 14 million dollars a year to care for prisoners in federal pris ons, surely we can afford five million to keep some of our young people from a life of crime." .'GOODN SS THAT YOU Penny for penny, there is no substitute for GOOD WHOLESOME FOOD. Nothing can -I be more important than guiding our children away from the paths that lead to juvenile delinquency. If a fed eral appropriation of five mil lion dollars would turn the trick, it would be money well i spent. I But On my way to work this morning I saw an example of something that is immensely ! more important in juvenile training than a federal pro gram administered by paid professionals. j On a fairly busy corner on i a street that is rather heavily I traveled in the morning by people on their way to work, 1 two charming children were standing. They were presunv ably on their way to school, i They were dressed with ex treme care. Their faces were shining clan. Their hair had been given that last affec tionate touch by a loving mother. They were waiting at the curb for the moment when it would be SAFE to cross. I slowed to a stop. Other cars slowed to a stop. I waved at them to, go across. They smiled at me and made a ges ture that said plainly WE'RE I WAITING UNTIL IT IS SAFE. I went ahead. The J other cars went ahead. When the traffic cleared, the chil dren went ahead. Benton County Population Higher Salem-IUPD - District census officials reported Saturday that preliminary figures show Benton county has gained more than 7,000 persons since 1950. This year's near-complete figure is 38.646, compared with 31,570 for 1950. First estimates for Corval lis show the city's current population at 20,437 versus 16.207 10 years ago. There was an apparent de cline 'n the population of Yamhill county. The prelim inary estimates are 32.267 for this year versus 33,484 in 1950 a loss of 1,217. The Boothia Penisula, most northly mainland point of North America, was discover ed by Sir John Ross in 1829. LET'S put it this way: If a federal appropriation of five million dollars will help in the juvenile problem, let's have it. If a federal pro gram administered by profes sionals and costing FIVE BIL LION DOLLARS will help in the juvenile problem, let's have it. But, speaking personally, I doubt if a federally paid-for and administered program costing five TRILLION dollars could equal in value the care ful, thoughtful, loving HOME TRAINI1NG that had obvious ly been given to those two charming children standing at that street crossing this morning. Three Hospitalized As Trucks Collide Lebanon-UTI) - Two pickup trucks collided late Friday several miles east of Scio on Gap road, hospitalizing three persons. Two small children were treated for Injuries. In fair condition today in Lebanon Community hospital were Mr. and Mrs. Dean Mus ic and Daniel E. Bynum, all of Scio.
