Trail - Mr. and Mrs. Scott
Brill described their recent
trip to the Orient and showed
pictures at a dinner meeting
of Shady Cove Rotary club.
They made the trip by air.
They stayed at the Imperial
hotel in Tokyo. In Mikko they
visited Buddhist and Shinto
shrines.
The Brills reported that
they noticed very little pov
erty in Japan, compared to
"overwhelming poverty" in
China. They also stayed on
the Kowloon peninsula and
took a sightseeing tram uphill
to Victoria, a suburb over
looking Hong Kong.
The results of World War
II are still to be seen in Ma
nila, according to travelers,
and they visited what had
been a prison camp for Ameri
cans interned during the war.
Before returning home, the
Brills visited their sons-in-law

For Study Club j
"Living in State" by Beat-j
rice Russell was the book re
viewed recently by the
Wednesday Study Club at
Girls' Community club. The
review was given by Mrs. Ha
zel E. Flurry.
The author has described
life in the American Foreign
Service as seen through the
eyes of a junior officer's wife.
Her husband Earle Russell
Jr., passed the State Depart
ment examinations and re
quested Ethiopia as his post.
Mrs. Russell dispels the idea
that Foreign Service officers
and their wives are "cookie
pushers" living a life of ease.
She says diplomats are re
ferred to disparagaingly as
the "striped-pants set" and
yet the social end is a serious
business, according to Mrs.
Flurry's review.
Mrs. Rita Miller read an ar
ticle describing the Parke-Ber-net
Auction galleries on Mad
ison Avenue, New York,
where many priceless treas
ures are sold; many coming
from Fifth avenue homes
which are "breaking up."
