The Coast Guard said the victims were Donald C. Mc Culloch and Robert D. Nel son, both of North Bend. They may have died of asphyxia tion. The craft, "G and G." was located by the Navy tug Cal oka about 16 miles northwest of the Umpqua river. The tug reported the craft was half submerged. The Coast Guard said the boat was reported to have had a leaky exhaust and that there were no other outward signs of death. A search had been conduc ted unsuccessfully all week. Sewer Assessment On Springbrook Is Deferred by Council The Medfurd city council Thursday night agreed to de fer until the next meeting a proposed assessment for a san itary sewer on Springbrook rd. to give property owners a chance to be heard. The assessment concerns the property on Springbrook rd. from a point approximately 600 feet south of West Rob erts rd., to 8(10 feet north of Buckshot Hill rd. The sanitary sewer is com pleted, but the assessed cost would run considerably over the original estimate due to a large amount of rock en countered during installation. The lateral front foot assess- Salem Population Hears 49,000 Mark Salem - HOT - Preliminary federal census figures released here put Salem's total popula tion at 4B.700 - up 5,059 from 1050. City officials had pre dicted that the capital's new count would run as high as 52,000. Ronald Blundell, district census supervisor, emphasized that the figures were prelim inary and that the final offic ial total should run slightly higher. A proposal to partially pave Summit ave., between Mary place and Clark st., across from the Jackson Park swim ming pool received a 4 to 3 favorable vote, but it was not the necessary three-fourths ap proval (or an item appearing on the agenda for the first time. It will again be con sidered. The council agreed to sell the state highway commission approximately two acres of property near the north fork of Little Butte creek for ap proximately $422. A public hearing was called for a water main on 10th Ft., from Cottage st. to Portland ave. Hedrick Student Takes Second Award Milton Poppa, eighth grade student at lledrick Junior High school and first place winner in the Junior high di vision of the American Legion auxiliary's poppy poster con test, has been awarded second prize in the state-wide contest. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Poppa, 803 Spen cer st., Medford. He will re ceive a SIS award. Judges for the local contest were Eugene Bennett, Mrs. David Erion, and Mrs. D. K. West. School Boundary Problem Solved Salem - IWD - A section of the Butteville School district in Clackamas county will be taken under the wing of the Cany school district, the Mar ion county district boundary board ruled Friday, A small segment of the Butteville district was left in a school district "No Man's Land" recently when a North Marion school district was formed under state law and voters rejected Clackamas district consolidation. Imperial Valley, California, now a famous garden center, was reclaimed from land once thought to be useless. Pacific Northwest made the charge of conspiracy as it filed a petition with the FPC to Intervene against the nine Washington Public Utility dis tricts bidding for a license for Nez Perce dam below the confluence of the Snake and Salmon riven. Net Qualified The Oregon company said the Weshington public power system "has not qualified and cannot in the future qualify under the Federal Power Act as an applicant for a license." They charged: "It was and is the intent and purpose of the Washington Public Power Supply system, the Northwest Public Power association, act ing in concert and conspiring together, to hamper and de lay the hearing on PNB's High Mountain Sheep project application."
