A number of the reports
studied claimed success dur
ing the first two months of
dieting, when weight reduc
tion is greatest. They then
failed to indicate what hap
pened later - whether the pa
tients reached the desired
weight or whether the partic
ular method in question could
be used effectively for long
term dieting.
Most uveiweight persons
need some sort of watchdog to
keep an eye on them. In many
cases the doctor considers
such people a bore. He admon
ishes them for being fat, gives
them a calorie chart, and tells
them to cat only so many cal
ories per tiny.
This attitude has opened the
door for nnn-niedical solutions
to overweight. Although com
mercial routines and prescrip
tions are usually based on
reasonably sound knowledge,
they are not geared to indi
vidual needs. Dr. Feinstein
said the obese person is chron
ically ill and should be treat
ed accordingly.
