Kirschner, M.D., believes that the actual cause of a huge number of cases of Arthritis is starvation for Vitamin C. 1 fcvery doctor who pre scribes aspirin or any other salicylate drugs for arthritis is condemning his patients to further troubles, i The salicylate drugs com' monly prescribed for arthritis actually rob the human body of enormous amounts of Vita min C. Thus we see the tragedy of thousands of agonized suf ferers hopefully taking sali cylate drugs, and thereby robbing their bodies still further of the necessary Vita min C needed to cure them, j If you have arthritis, throw out your salicylate drugs. In stead of those drugs, include large amounts of these foods in your daily diet: oranges, lemons, tomatoes, pineapples, green peppers. They are the richest food sources of Vita min C. Citrus fruits (oranges, lem ons), although extremely rich in the needed Vitamin C, will combine with calcium and re move some of this very im portant mineral from the sys tem. So extra precautions to keep well supplied with cal cium must be taken when large quantities of citrus fruits are eaten. Remember those important facts concerning arthritis, and apply them. And finally don't forget that smoking is one of Vita min C's worst enemies. Dr. W. J. McCormick of Toronto, Canada, has shown in tests that one cigarette cancels out 25 milligrams of Vitamin C from the blood stream-about the amount you would get in an average orange. John K. Telford, Route 4, Box 119, Grants Pass, Ore. A Challenge To the Editor: First, thank you for your policy of respect ing the individual. Though I seldom write, I still apprect ate the column, as I'm sure many more do, including Mr. J. P. Wlrth, who is the reason (along with any more who may feel like he does) for writing this. This is not to call him names or any attempt to beat him down in any way, but, being a Christian, I must in sist that I'm as sincere in my belief as he is in his. Mr. Wirth, I wonder if you realize the seriousness of the step you have just taken? There can be no turning back, because you have climbed out on a limb, so to speak. Henceforth, you can know no real peace until you find out for sure. How do I know this? You have shown by your let ter, you have a questioning mind. And questioning minds are never happy without an swers to the questions they ask. "So what?", you say. So this, my friend. I would give you a challenge-not be tween you and me, for neither could convince the other. Rather, I challenge you to begin a new hobby. I think you have courage, or you would never have written in. You will need it! Here it is: Start reading the Bible and doing research on the side to prove what you are reading is untrue! (Remember-opin- ions will not do, since you are biased.) Get proof that is above question. A hint: Ar chaeological findings in the last hundred years, or the calculations and findings of astronomers. The public li brary would be a starting place. Jim Davis, 3410 North Pacific Hwy. Medford On Chessman Case To the Editor: Since the Chessman execution has caused some comment in your communications column, I felt that I should say a few words on the subject. Under California law it was the governor's duty to see thai the Chessman execution was carried out, as that was the penalty given him on his conviction. The governor could not - nmripvp as under article 7, section 1 of the Cali fornia State Constitution ne. ther the governor nor the legislature shall have Ver to grant pardons, reprieve or commutation of sentence in ny case where the convict has been twice convicted of felony, unless upon written recommendation of a majority of the judges of the Supreme Court. As for the Supreme Court, it would have to establish a reasonable doubt as to Chess man's conviction. For valid convictions that will hold up in the courts, the accused would have to be proven guilty beyond a reasonable uuubt, pnd in Chessman's case in 11 vears of Ipgai ...-.r?ii in the courts, he failed to prove a reasonable doubt as to his conviction. The governor was right in his refusal to grant a reprieve and the Supreme Court made its decision. However, I am against capi tal punishment for one good reason. The trial courts can make a mistake and sentence an innocent man to his death, in which case the damage could not be undone. In place of capital punish ment I would fix the punish ment for capital offenses at life imprisonment without pa- roie. The people of California, Oregon or any state that has the death penalty in force, can abolish it at the voting polls. I have little regard for outcries of sentiment based on ignorance of the laws, as this question is in the hands of the people, not the govern ment. This issue was placed on the Oregon ballot last election and it was defeated. So the matter of capital punishment is the responsibility of uie people. Carl tsouma, 259S Corey rd., Medford. Mav To the Editor: Beautiful May, Sunshine is bright Flowers are gay. Stars out at night. Birds are in flight, Frogs croak a poem, Ants are a-swarm Building their home. Nights are for dreaming, Days are for work. Even the lazy Forget to shirk. Soon 'twill be June Coming around. Then we'll complain As hot day abound. Mrs. Delbert Casey, Route 1, Box 358 Central Point, Ore. Understanding To the Editor: We would like to take this opportunity to thank your staff for their efforts on behalf of Under standing, Unit No. 20, of Med ford. Thanks to the generous amount of space you have af forded our organization, the local unit has enjoyed a con siderably larger attendance at its meetings than might other wise have been expected. We who are engaged in the dissemination of information on flying saucers, the reality of life on other planets and the field of metaphysics al ways appreciate assistance from the press. Again, our thanks. Daniel W. Fry, President, Cleveland E. Twitchell, Public Relations Director Understanding P.O. Box 22, Station C, Pasadena, Calif. Box Scores and Chessman To the Editor: Would it be possible for you to find room in your paper to print the box scores of the two Major and Coast League? There are so many of us Base ball (bats) Fans that line w follow individual players and cannot do so without a box score. Iii answer to Mr. 'Floyd Mc Cabe'i letter in regard to Caryl Chessman. He was not murdered. Caryl Chessman committed suicide. There nev. er was a criminal wnu any more chance iu straight than Chessman, but, he broke every law there was to break. Regardless of what nappen ed to him he could never pay for one crime he committed, the raping of a 17-year-o d girl, who is still hopelessly insane, and must continue to live5 out her years in that con dition.'' . . . , George Walter, 635 Glenwood dr., Ashland, Ore. Editor's note: Any others want box scores? We'd have to make special arrangements to obtain Zthem, and because of llmiUnJ space, something .else would (tv to fx TeR out. But if enough interust if shown, we ll look into it. Waal'e Tke Mount To the Editor: This re ligious controversy seems ri diculous. I'm not e Catholic, but the Catholic church does believe in Jesus Christ; the Virgin birth; and the Bible; and, Usui the Lord's prayer, end some doing that well. America talks about athe istic Russia, and that Russian children are kept from re ligious services. Yet one atheist woman was respon- q i i. 1 f ir mmnnlnrt f wintitra reading and prayer from our schools. Louis Cassels in the Friday, April 22, Mail Tribune, said that in some communities even reading a Psalm at open ing exercise of school brought sharp protests from some parents. What's the matter with America? ' Our government . found ed on the Bible and prayer. Our congress is opened by prayer, and has a chaplain. Our armed forces, have chap lains and religious services. Why not our schools? If our children are not taught a be lief in God, how much better are we than Russia? No wonder we have so many delinquent teen-agers. Edgar Hoover says most of the crime by teen-agers comes from those who do not attend Sunday school regularly. Mrs. F. H. Dressier 1107 East Main st. Medford Freedom of Speech To the Editor: It is great to live. It is great to live in America. It is great to live in Oregon in Jackson county. I like the Upper Rogue. It is good to live even in concentration camp. Japa nese who had become Chris tians demonstrated it right here in Oregon during World War II. I am glad the editors in our America like yourself have always lived and died for individual liberty and Jus tice and freedom of speech. I have been much surer of your own attitude since I started writing to the editor myself. Mr. Reece, 1 would like to ask, was your letter publish ed the day you expected it to be? My own letters have been published promptly and all the others I know about have had the same treatment. E. A. aidently advocated approval of the budget for school district 54f)C, yet he published skillfully written letters that he knew would likely lead to its rejection. To a Communist it is silly. To the Christian It is funda mental individual freedom, worth dying for. Waldo P. Nye, Prospect, Ore. Bible's Proof To the Editor: Mr. Wirth's article was very interesting. For 20 years I believed the same. Millions were being slaughtered in World War I. I turned to the Bible to learn why. I learned, prophecy and common sense was my an swer. Prophecy written hundreds of years ago has been and is being fulfilled to the letter. The Bible tells what is com ing, why, and when, the day and hour is . not revealed. Micah .(5:2) J foretold that Jesus would be born in Beth lehem; Joseph and Mary lived in Nazareth a week's journey from Bethlehem. The decree of the emperor of Rome forced them to go to Bethle hem to enroll, as we read in Luke 2:1-7, while there Jesus was born, fulfilling prophecy written over 700 years before. Zechariah (9:9) said Jesus would ride into Jerusalem on an ass, with its colt following; 548 years later this was fulfilled, as we read in Matthew 21:1-11. Psalm 41:9 said Christ would be be trayed by one of His disciples; over 1,000 years later, this was fulfilled, as we read in Matti?w 26:23-25. The words Christ would say upon the cross were pointed out 1.000 years before in Psalm 11:1. Read them in Matthew 27:46. There are hundreds of such prophecies in the old Testa ment and their fulfillment in the New. Look at science, "God hangeth the earth upon nothing" (Job. 26:7). Sound" silly, man can't match this, Copernicus was the first to prove this fact, 3,000 years after God .had made it known. This earth with billions of tons of water on its surface, yrt none J.1 , . -H r-?-i't be all on top of a ruund bail, without God it doesn't make sense. God maketh weight for the winds (Job 28:25). Galileo was the first to learn this fact 3,150 years later. The life of all flesh is the blood (Lev. 17:14); William Harvey was the first to learn this fact 3,115 years later. The clients shall melt with fer vent heat (2' feier 5:10). To day this is our greatest fear, since our discovery of nuclear fission. God revealed these facts hundreds of years dgo. Today we know by expert :e they are facts. They, with common sense, prove theBIW!e to me, a;id God as its'-authorr F. E. Beverly, U J 634 Crater Lake ave., Medford Charge Is "Ridiculous" To the Editor: As a Chap lain who has been in U.S. Government service for over 26 years, I find it amusing, if not utterly ridiculous, to find 1 1 h e National Council of Churches wrta.iaJ- s feeing j infiltrated by "Communists." Dorian Woods, of Prospect, Ore., said in your columns on May 2nd: "Evangelization on military establishments is also under the control of the Coun cil." Thus, by the dubious "guilt by association" tech pique, military Chaplains are "controlled" by a Communistic-infiltrated Council of Churches! How silly, indeed, can you get? In my own ministry as Army Chaplain over a ten year period I held and pnrtici pated in a number of evan gelistic missions on Army posut. In r.ct ? svnale one of them were the Chaplains "under the control of the Council." Chaplains of all de nominations, including ultra conservative groups, cooper ated voluntarily in such ef forts, and cordially welcomed speakers from all types of churches to assist them in their missions. Among the many Chaplains with whom I served, in the United States and overseas, there were many who were not affiliated in any way with the National Council of Churches, either by church or denomination. Such a claim is typical of the utterly false and misleading propaganda that is using the smear tech nique to discredit cooperating Christians of differing denom inational affiliations who be lieve in working together, in stead of against each other. Communism has found one of its most eager allies, albeit unknown to themselves, in those who follow the lead of a very small group of diS' gruntled critics of cooperative Christianity. Theirs is the mis sion to disrupt and to divide Christians, instead of foster ing a "ministry of reconcilia tion" among those who differ from them. This indeed Is the true ap plication of the quoted state ment of J. Edgar Hoover: "Communists are able to se cure ministers of the Gospel to promote their evil work Unwittingly or ignorantly, this is what the critics of the National Council of Churches are doing in setting Christian against Christian, thus ena- i biine our kteatest enemy to 1 divide and conquer us. Henry W. Anderson, Chaplain (USA-Retired), 1602 East Evergreen blvd.. Vancouver, Wash. Who's An Adult? To the Editor: Recently your paper carried a commun ication from a Mr. Robert Betschart of Medford. Mr. Belschart indicated' his dis pleasure concerning the show ing of "adult" movies to 18 year old members of our so ciety. He is under the im pression that the 18 year old is not an adult. I should like to ask Mr. Betschart just ex actly what an adult is? Is such a term to be defined on a chronological basis only? The average movie pro duced and shown in the United States today is ficti tious and unrealistic. The American people are con stantly subjected to this fan tasy on life from, Hollywood. As a result of this pushing of these fairy-tales the average young American is usually quite unaware of life as it actually is. He has no real con cept of himself or the world around him. Isn't it possible that this en vironment of unrealism is as large a cause of what Mr. Betschart calls "sexual and mental aberrations" as any adult" movie? This is a point very rarely considered by modern American Society. I will agree with Mr. Bets chart that there are a great number of illicit publications circulating in the country at present. But wouldn't It be wise to find the reasons under lying such a trend rather than attacking this trend directly? A realistic outlook on the subject of morals might effect quite a change in the attitudes oi some civic mkided ensors certainly in the attitudes of those who base their opinions on iiieir ur small emotional and sociological experience.
