One of the Cubans was . Lazaro Damaso Montcsinos, a former lieutenant colonel who had been in charge of the prison of Castillo de Principe in Havana under the regime . of ousted Cuban President . Fulgcncio Batista. The others were his daughter and her husband, Maj. Santiago Rodri guez, and another Cuban who wanted to flee his native , country. Soldiers Open Fir A small, fast plane roared in from the east and settled on the highway. The four would-be refugees rushed for it, and as they did so, hidden soldiers opened fire with ma- chii.e guns, The soldiers arrested the four Cubans and the two United States citizens who had brought the plane in from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The government of Cuban Premier Fidel Castro seized on the incident to launch a propaganda attack against the United States. Cuban officials ."V 11 said it proved a U.S. conspir acy of aggression. Wednesday, the U.S. gov ernment answered the Cuban charge. A federal grand Jury here indicted the two U.S. fliers and a Cuban citizen and charged the whole affair was cooked up in Havana to supply the Castro government with anti-U.S. propaganda. Flier Indicted The grand Jury indicted one of the filers, William J. Sher galis, 33, of North Hollywood, Fla., as "an agent of a for eign principal, namely the government of Cuba." It Indicated the other flier, Howard L. (Swede) Rund quist, 35, of Miami, apparent ly was a dupe in the case. The same charge placed against Shergalis was placed against Hector Garcia Soto, 35, a Cuban citizen and pur chasing agent for the Cuban air force since November of 1D59. According to the gov ernment, he and Shergalis ar ranged the flight. Arrested by FBI Garcia was arrested Wed nesday by FBI agents as he stepped off a plane arriving from Cuba. Shergalis and Rundquist still are in Jail in Cuba, where they have been in custody since the ill-starred flight. The U.S. Justice Depart ment In Washington said it plans no Immediate steps to have Shergalis and Rundquist returned to this country for trial even though Shergalis was reported to have told the U.S. Embassy In Cuba that Cuban officials hired him to rig the flight. May J, I960 A9 Well Street Chatter New York-lTD - No doubt about It advance knowledge of an impending stock split is valuable information, ac cording to a recent study ap pearinK in Barron's Weekly. In 88 of the 94 examples under study, the announce ment of a split was preceded by a significant increase in Hie market value of the stock. On the average, this rise amounted to about 15 per cent and normally the stocks out-performed the market by about 10 per cent. The study found that unless the split surprises the market seldom, a sell-off usually oc curs after the formal an nouncement has been made. Two months after their splits were revealed, nearly half of all the New York Stock Ex change stock splits in 1959 were selling at lower prices. Moreover, 51 of the 94 ex amples failed to perform as well as the market. The moral: the best way to profit from stock splits Is to buy slock split candidates rather than stocks which have just announced their Impend ing split status. Meat packing, long regard ed as a "feast or famine" in dustry, has so revised Its basic operation- that it is much less subject to extreme cyclical changes than In the past, ac cording to a study of the In dustry by Goodbody Sc Co. Profits of the major fire casualty organizations In 1959 continued their recovery from the extremely adverse 1957 year and this improvement promies to carry over into 1062 at least, a survey of the industry by E. F. Hutton & Co. says. Mother's Day Is Observed by Club Mother's day was observed at the Wednesday noon lun cheon of Menford Klwanis club at Rogue Valley Country -lub.
