Gil Hodges Has Slump Los Angeles - I1TII - Gil Hodges, one of the all-time stars of the Dodgers, glumly conceded today Los Angeles might be better off with him on the bench for a while until he regains his batting form. Among the best fielding first basemen in the majors, Hodges on the current home stand hasn't driven in a run or advanced a runner ex cept on a walk. His batting average slumped to .208 Wed nesday night as he went hit less for the third straight game while Milwaukee scored a 3-2 win. Manager Walt Alston sought to end the Dodgers' losing streak by shaking up his line Boudreau, Grimm Make Job Switch By GENE BLUDEAU Chicago - HTP - Lou Bou dreau, a Chicago Cubs radio announcer for the past two seasons, today took over as the Cub's manager with "some very definite ideas of mv own'' for improvement. Boudreau. 42, was named Cubs pilot Wednesday in an "inter-family" switch which moved former Manager Char lie Grimm, 61, into Bou dreau's job as sportcaster. The "trade'' was jointly an nounced by Ci o General Man ager John Holland and Ward Quaal, vice president of radio station WGN. Boudreau will finish out Grimm's one-year contract as manager of the Cubs, and Grimm will take over (he balance of Bou dreau's pact with WGN, the announcement said. Fort Vancouver had been given 63' points to 60 for Reyn olds. But Reynolds officials in a recount Wednesday found that they had left off four points for the host team, giving it enough to win. The victory, the Braves, fifth in six games, moved them to within two games of the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates in what is now a tightly bunched National League field. Cubs Beat Piratei The Chicago Cubs handed the Pirates their second straight loss, 5-1, the Cincin nati Reds shaded the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Phil adelphia Phillies, 5-3 in the other National League games. The New York Yankees look over first place in the American league when they topped the Detroit Tigers, 4-2, and the Baltimore Orioles downed the Chicago White Sox. 6-4. The Washington Senators beat the Cleveland Indians. 7-6. and the Kansas City As defeated the Boston Red Sox, 5-3. Alston's new lineup had Gil Hodges at third base and Bob Aspromonte at shortstop but the Dodgers were helpless against Buhl except in the fourth inning when a walk. Duke Snider's double and an infield out produced their run. Drysdale's record is now 3-3. Dick Ellsworth, 20-year-old bonus left-hander, pitched a five-hitler for the Cubs, who dealt Bob Friend his first loss with an eight-hit attack that included Frank Thomas' third homer in two days. Ellsworth struck out four' and walked none in facing only 31 batters. McLish Wins First Cal McLish, acquired in one of Frank Lane's contro versial winter deals, won his first game for the Reds and snapped Willie Mays' 16-game hitting streak in the process..! Shortstop Roy McMillan de-'j livered the game -winning blow when his single snapped a 2-2 tic in the sixth. Jack Sanford suffered the loss for San Francisco. Joe Cunningham's two-run single snapped a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning and enabled St. Louis' Marshall Bridges to win his second game. Carl Sawatski had singled to tie the score after an error by sliortslop Joe Koppe started the Redbird rally. The Yankees, who were in seventh place on this date last year, moved into the AL lead behind a six-hitter bv rookie Bill Short. Klamath will present a heavy hitting lineup and a pitching staff which has good depth. And, Crater will have to do much better than in a previous series if it is to over come the Pelicans. Klamath crushed the Comet 16 to 1 and 13 to 0 last month at Klamath Falls. However. Crater has indi cated that it can be tougher than those scores show. The Comets bowed just 5 to 7 and 3 to 5 last week end to Med ford which has bounced the Pels 6 to 1 and 8 to 4. Klamath, now in second spot in the circuit, needs the victory to remain strong in the titular chase. A loss would drop Crater out of the run ning. Other Southern Oregon loop action on Friday will have Grants Pass at Ashland. League teams will meet on Saturday but in non-counting games. Ashland will be at Crater and Medford at Grants Pass.
